£1000 dilema

shame really, we bought a 2 litre laser last year for £300, ran it for a few months to make sure it was ok, then stripped it and fitted all the bits into a mk1, small notch cut in the sump and some body mods for the rad and thats about it, easily the cheapest way to get a pinto in there.

 

 

im after a 1700 x-flow anyways

hmmmmmmmmm good price soo i have my price list

 

 

vinal off roof painted £200

 

stiff springs (pair) £40

 

spax adjustable shocks £130

 

polly bushes £90

 

that leaves me with £540 for a engine

your be able to do the lot for a grand depending on what mods you have to the engine

just bought these for my front legs. bought them coz they cheep. anyone got them and recomend them or are they shite?????? they look pretty good

Noticed you said your handling was sloppy ... so your rectifiying this by stiffening everything up above the level of whats acctually keeping you attached to the road.

 

Once you've fitted everything go up to your car and wiggle it sideways, just push it sideways at the headlamp and release, push again, release.. while doing that look at the wheel ... yep the rim is slopping around in the tyre !!!

 

All that work stiffening up the suspension and your tyres are still flopping around like a JCB's

 

Case in point ... had a customer with a Mod Prod Capri, rule only allowed 7x13" wheels and he ran 205 mm wide tyres on it.. its understeered.

He tried everthing , more this , more that, more this less of that, up rate that , uprate this , fit that.. scratch head some more ... someone suggested it was his brakes doing it .. so he booked in for a rear disc conversion.

I did his axle and he came to collect it, it was at this point he mentioned why he was having it done.

 

So i asked what was happening ..he explained and i said bring the car down.

 

As soon as it came in the workshop i said tyres are tucking under on the front .. go smaller on the tyre width.

 

He looked at me like i'm some sort of nutter.

 

he kept saying that he needed more grip not less...

 

*bangs head against wall"

 

I sugested 185's and he laughed saying he'll slide off.

 

Well he went out with his new brakes and still understeered, suprise suprise !!!

 

Finally he changed to 185's .. under steer gone and he said the whole front felt sharper.

 

it dosnt matter what you do to the suspension if the tyres are letting is all wobble around

yer i know wat u are saying i currently have 175/65 firestones on mine and they kinda stretch out slightly to the rims so its not too bad.

 

was thinking of getting a539 but they dont look much different to the ones i have already.

 

wat tyres do you sugest???

Those should be on a 7" rim ... they will lose cornering ability on anything less than 7

175/50/13 would be ok.. 165 would probably be better.

 

the thing to watch is the numbers .. take a tape measure to a tyre and read off the tread width... its a lot smaller than that number on the sidewall. Even more so with budget tyres, the thing to look for is how far the tread surface goes down the sidewall as this is included in the numbers. I've seen a 185 with a contact surface of 135 ... 50 mm short of the numbers on the side, but the sidewall went down 25mm ..

 

Good branded tyres dont do this as much, but even so, its best to take a rule with you if buying tyres
