just got back from santa pod, I did the 1/4 mile on saturday and since then my diff has been making some horrid noises. I put the diff in about 2 weeks ago and have done a few donuts and stuff and started hearing a few nocking noises coming from the back, i figured it may have been suspension stuff and put my anti tramp bars back on as theyve been off for a while. After 3 runs up the strip yesterday it was making a really loud squeaky noise and a bit clunky and knocky but only when i was making tight turns like parking and turning round. I asked a guy that looked like he might know with a mk1 and he was pretty up on diffs and told me that it was normal as they get hot and wound up when you do burnouts and stuff. this morning wasnt as bad but when i drove from the camping field to the show bit it was definatley still there. I've just drove it home and every roundabout and junction was really clunky, not so much squeaky but really knocky and a bit grindy. doesnt sound good.

i bought the diff already in the pig head bit with a 3.89 crown wheel and pinion already in there, from an autojumble stand at the classic ford show. Its a tranx and apparantly brand new, it looked new. i paid £420 for the lot so thought i was getting a bargain.

by the way, my best time from the 3 runs was 15.25 @88mph. pretty pleased with my first ever go. I wanted to do some more runs today but obviously was worried about this.

thanks for looking guys, any advice welcome.

Joe

p.s. I tried to find someone with a stand pass last night but had no luck so i stuck it in the show and shine bit today.

Sounds like it's set to tight.

Sure Mr Grumpy (Wayne) at WPE can sort this out

EDIT: If it was on of Ricky's then yes they are indeed brand new.

it was from some welsh lads, i asked for a receipt and he wrote "3.9 lsd £420" on a bit of paper from a hello kitty pad. so i asked for their number and he pulled out a bit of hello kitty pad with his number in biro on it from his pocket.

Pretty sure it hasn't leaked. I sealed it with silicon and it still looks clean.

No.

Sounds like it had no oil.

My old one not yours.

Yeah but are you saying it made those noises and there was oil it just needed adjusting? If so then thats good news I guess.

:roll::roll::roll:

Yep tried so many different oils, rebearing about 5 times including correctly setting up crown wheel and pinion backlash. (I worked at a Ford main dealer at the time)

All made no difference it was set to tight for road use.

Once adjusted it made no noise.

newer tran x slippers do click and clonk as the clutch plates are set a little tight its common for these noises it can be adjusted internally to stop most of this noise. what oil did you use?

Cool, got any good suggestions of where to take it? I'm in Herts.

I used limited slip oil, and i put a litre in.

Needs filling with oil till coming out of your axle filler plug. Will need setting up for your application, eg track/race set ups will be different from how you want it for mainly road use. Setting up should cure it or either that or your CWP has lost some teeth following donuts as happened in one of mine once

Well I was advised by wayne to do some donuts as it might free it up a bit, so heres me trying to fix my car...

It probably sounds worse now, I think I'll whip it out and have it adjusted to be a bit more road use friendly.

Nah I'm just playing with yah.

They do get nosier after some stick, but not always, if they are set tight as they warm up they get nosier.

But it's only an annoyance.

Might be worth getting it checked out just to be sure .

A few years ago now i remember we done an mot on a customers mk2 rally car , when i reversed it off the pit the diff made all sorts of noises and i said to the owner that the diff wasnt right , he told me that it was a lsd and they all done it , i tried pointing out i knew that but his still wasnt right even for a lsd , he told me that i was a young lad and didnt know what i was on about . The day of the rally came and 5 miles into the first stage his diff broke and he was out of the rally . He could of saved himself loosing alot of money if he had just listened to the idiot young mot test station lad .
