SAMMYBOY Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 I have put a kind of ad on the Scottish escort site, to ask if anyone wanted resto work done on their old fords.....I have had 2 replies, both asking really silly questions about bodywork...I cant believe the amount of times ive looked at the site to see people complaining that noone up here does good work on old fords etc.. except Retrospurt, who noone would want to do work on their car... I was offering to do work cheaper, but excellent , so that i can eventually buy a decent mk2 escort again. Panel beater with mega experience, and a painter with about 16 years experience. Maybe i should take a leaf out my brothers book, and move down south...You lot always seem to be looking for work to be done, and done well...... Sorry, rant over...If i dont start to make a bit of extra cash, i`ll be giving the Lab i share with Doc up...Huge space, no car!!!!!!
MadMark2 Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Try putting ya prices UP !!! I know that might sound stoopid, but a builder mate of mine had a simular problem, thought goin in cheap and offering a good job would win the work. After a chat with one of his other builder mates who told him to up his prices, Doubled them !!! Work started coming in, now he hasnt looked back ! Look at it this way, if a reputable bodyshop is quoting 2k+ for a rub down and respray, and you go in at 1k tops, people will automatically question the quality of your work. untill people see the fruits of your abilitys you have nothing to prove how good you are. Word of mouth, greatest advertising tool EVER !

I hear what your saying, but was just doing this for extra cash...i wouldnt mind charging 1k for a rubdown and sprayjob...It obviously doesnt pay to be nice!, and want to help people out.

bomber1 Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 mine needs doing as well but ur totaly the wrong end of the country for me
SAMMYBOY Posted January 29, 2007 Author Report Posted January 29, 2007 Thats the problem guys, the osf scene isnt as big up here....But i can give you the number of a decent delivery company to get your cars up here...lol. If this was my main job, i`d have a 4x4 and a trailer to pick up and drop of cars. But at the moment i still have to work in a bodyshop for someone else.
Retromotorsport Posted January 30, 2007 Report Posted January 30, 2007 I try to keep my prices inline with the "rally type cars" prices, even though more work goes into the race /road setups .. the seat crossmembers being an example, the rally type is 2 bits of folded sheet with a couple of holes in it welded ontop of the old one.... my one replaces the old one entirely and aids the adjustment of the radius arms ... takes hours to do and is priced far too cheap really (accountant talking ie the wife) But i want to give a car the best i can for the owner and most owners cant afford the work, yes the mods will give the car a few seconds a lap and enable it to run at a ride height that the rally car stuff could never get down too, but for most its a road car, and a second car at that, a fun toy for the weekend . Average cost of a full specced rally car is around 50k ...(and upto 80k) Mine... oooh theres a few that have hit 40k But the shells ... the rally cars between 5 and 12k (yes 12 k according to one on Alcoholics Anonymous) Mine averages out at around 7k tops. Pricing is one of the hardest things to get right in the car modding game and personally i hate doing it ... would rather just build em and forget about the money ..hey ho...theres always a lottery win around the corner. Stick with it ... it takes time
