SebringRS Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 The old motors coming out the 1100 this weekend, making way for the new 1300 First time i've ever removed and refitted and engine, so kinda wanted to know any tips and tricks you lot have to make it a bit easier Im gunna label everything etc. Hopefully will be pretty simple, as im just swapping the same bits over from the 1100 to the 1300, albeit a new clutch, carb, inlet and exhaust manifold, other than that, the rest is being unbolted from the 1100 and going on the 1300 We were going to take the gearbox out, but i kinda decided that why make life harder, when I can get away with just the engine out But yeah, just a few tips would be handy Im taking it out saturday (if all goes well) then get everything swapped over to the 1300 sunday morning, hopefully ready to go in by sunday night, then dads booked the thursday off work, so we will spend thursday getting it back in and all plumbed back up, and if we have time, started and slightly tuned Im doing it in half term so that I dont need to use the car for commuting, so gives us time to get it running right, ready for me to drive it to college the following monday
lotusless Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 You could always polish it out of the bay !!!
SmokeEm Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 Make sure you have a decent clutch alignment tool Tom
72mk1escort Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 Make sure you have a decent clutch alignment tool Tom dont bother with those mate, use a socket extension and look down it and use your eye to align it, that's how ive always done it and never had any problems
72mk1escort Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 Make sure you have a decent clutch alignment tool Tom dont bother with those mate, use a socket extension and look down it and use your eye to align it, that's how ive always done it and never had any problems Only other tip is might be easier to take box and engine out complete and then attach gearbox to new engine and fit back in as one lump as its not much harder as long as you get the right angle when lowering it back in. You will need a decent engine hoist. Lots of cups of tea and take your time mate. Hope this helps you, if you was closer I would happily come and lend a hand
PCOE Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 I agree... I fitted box to new engine and fitted it as one.... It was so much easier Had front up on wheel ramps and a decent hoist
mk1estate Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 make sure you have a good hoist and get the car up high, ive found that if you swap the crossmember bolts with longer ones you can drop the crossmember a few inches which helps. Good tip about giving the engine bay a good clean up whist its out and use an alignment tool if you have one cos if your out just a bit you will struggle, its ok if you have a good eye but a bugger if your out a bit. Where are you as i have a hoist here in Hastings if you need to borrow one
flyingbanana Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 find a old gearbox and chop the end off..........perfect alignment tool
Yeomans22 Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 when i did mine i had the engine and box out, i fitted the clutch but didn't do it really tight, so it wouldn't move the pressure plate unless you pushed it, i then put the box on which moved the plate to where it needed to be, removed the gearbox again and done the bolts up. quick splash of unleaded to clean up and grease around the engine bay and re fit
emu Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 hold on, my bit of advice is on its way......
emu Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 If your going to pull the engine and box out in one lump then jack the rear end of the car as high as you can. That way you wont need to hang it at such a steep angle to get it all in/out. If you can do it together then I would. Its easier than trying to manhandle the gearbox back onto the engine whilst lying on the deck.
rallyesport04 Posted October 27, 2012 Report Posted October 27, 2012 undo as much as poss on the ground then get it up on axlestands or similar label everything have plenty of rag to hand put a towel on the heater bubble slam pannel an wings if your worried about your paintwork keep your cool if it starts to do your haed in walk away have a tea an think an come back to it
SebringRS Posted October 29, 2012 Author Report Posted October 29, 2012 Cheers for the tips, its all back in now, just gotta wait til my day off Thursday to get it running After much talking we decided to leave the box in Was'nt that hard to get back on 1100 unbolted...
