5tox Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 Ive been looking into something that has me intreaged, you can buy a DIY coilover set off fleebay for around £40 converting your existing struts it just seems too good to be true, has anybody done this or does anybody know where i can find an informative picture heavy guide before i have a go, i believe my mk1 escort has capri front struts if that makes any difference
Top Ghia Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 It was covered in Classic ford mag a couple of years ago, ask in the mag section they may have it for download.
Arfur Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 We've done a few over the years, but this is the most recent, done at Retro Gary's using a 2.8i strut. http://www.classicfordmag.co.uk/2012/11 ... coilovers/
iandq Posted November 10, 2012 Report Posted November 10, 2012 hi mate, i did mine a few months ago for my anglia project, i welded mine top and bottom, but tigged them so there isn't as much weld to stop the collars being unscrewed, if you don't weld yours top and bottom be sure to seam seal the top before you paint to stop water getting down between the sleeve and strut body.if you do mig it mask the sleeve well beforehand to stop spatter ruining the threads. best of luck, ian.
5tox Posted November 10, 2012 Author Report Posted November 10, 2012 cheers mate that info is real helpful, i reckon ill weld top and bottom to keep all the crap out and very carefully grind back the welds possibly with my dremel as opposed to the grinder
welshmike Posted November 10, 2012 Report Posted November 10, 2012 when i did mine i welded top and bottom with a mig, didnt grind the welds down but why would you need to remove the spring seats? Also if i did mine again i would position the adjuster tube higher up the strut and run quite a short spring so i had more wheel/tyre clearance. Im no expert though so i stand to be corrected.
5tox Posted November 11, 2012 Author Report Posted November 11, 2012 im sure ive heard others say that online too, how high up the shock did you mount your tube and how high would you do it if you did it again? the classic ford magazine 'guide' recommends 50mm from the end of the tube
welshmike Posted November 11, 2012 Report Posted November 11, 2012 Yeah i did mine 50mm down, as per the guide but id put them right at the top next time, maybe 5mm down to give something to weld to. If you do put them this high up just watch you dont damage the thread inside the top of the strut. Burtons recomended an 11 or 12" spring for me at the time, if i did it again id use about a 8" long spring. Good luck
