DAZZA Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 I've been told I might not need to split them. Will be running solid discs. Any advice?
rallyesport04 Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 theres o rings between the two halfs and o rings an dirt seals round the pistons if you got a rebuid kit i would replace the lot if you only have piston seals dont split the caliper in two
DAZZA Posted January 19, 2013 Author Report Posted January 19, 2013 Thanks for response. Quite happy to split and replace all seals, but was told it can be a pig. Just wanted to know what the pig part of the job is?
rallyesport04 Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 id say the hardest thing to fit would be the dirt seals can be tricky the rest are very easy personaly id split them do it once an do it properlry fit an forget
Escort Mk1 4 Door Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 easy to do split mine to convert to 2.8 vented also done the calipers on mg midget almost same and they were found in the car roof down in a leaky barn for 11 years was still easy
john_3.0s Posted January 21, 2013 Report Posted January 21, 2013 check the pistons and calipers for scoreing and give them a VERY LIGHT rub with some very fine emery to polish them up, then clean the whole lot in fresh brake fluid you dont want any crud in there. also use a little fresh brake fluid to lubricate the piston surfaces as your reassemble them. Getting the pistons out can be a bit tricky if you have an air line make an adapter up with some old brake line to blow them alomst right out aganist a piece of wood (in place of a disk) before you split the caliper open. its all pretty straght forward so long as you keep everything really clean
DAZZA Posted January 21, 2013 Author Report Posted January 21, 2013 All came apart very easily, including pistons... thanks for advice. One thing that concerns me is ive noticed one caliper is stamped 'type16' and the other just has a stamp '123'. All dimensions, bolts, bleed nipples in exactly the same place. Seems like one is a replacement....... any ideas?
