great cortinas exhaust has decided to blow its head off cost £30 in fuel to Chelsea last nite from Gatwick and back will b going to retro show in my van now

am i missing something? exhaust blows  and cost £30 quid to bridge and back why would the fuel consumption change because of an exhaust blow?

probably because it sounds faster you drove it faster and harder i've never heard of an exhaust blow causing bad fuel consumption

im sure ive had cars before that have performed terribly on fuel consumption with a badly blowing exhaust, then was fine again with a new exhaust

 

maybe it is in the mind? who knows

i can agree there i lost 135 miles off my range in my car 535 down to 400  with a cracked collecter on the down pipe

If gases escaping quicker caused massive fuel consumption, performance exhausts would be a big no no..

It can depend on the engine, design and stage of tune, e.g. some will be affected more than others.

 

In all exhausts the "pulse" of expelled gases creates low pressure behind it, this then sucks additional charge into the engine, and may increase fuel consumption. Also if you collapse the low pressure, by removing the exhaust or having a hole then you reduce the suck and could reduce power and engine runs like a dog...

Where abouts is it blowing, the manifold or the system ?

Hmm, I just see the system as an elongated tail pipe, it does very little other than carry gases to the back of the car and provide somewhere handy to hang a slincer. Once the gases have left the manifold it's job done as far as performance/fuelling go. Just my take on things..<br /><br /> Hopefully you can get it sorted without to much bother

what steve said  straight through on mine always has been 2.1/2 inch empty back box has all will know atmo cossie approx 20 to the gallon when spanking it same at pod with NO system if it was that rich it would flood but ha ho if its only a clamp its a 5 min fix or a complete new set in an hour
