Ok do when you fit a type 9 gearbox onto an Xflow you have to put a spigot bearing into the flywheel. But do you remove this to but a standard four speed box back on? I know the clutch is different!? Any info would be appreciated ???

The end of the input shaft past the splines is what you measure

Yes you need a spigot bearing for either

The 5 speed Type 9 is longer than a 4 speed

If your swapping Type 9 5 speed for Type 9 4 speed the spigot clutch etc will fit

If your fitting a Type E then input shaft is smaller with 20 splines so new clutch

I believe that the gearbox output shaft is also different meaning you need a longer prop with different end that goes in the gearbox tail

Gearbox mounting point is also further forward on a 4 speed

If your fitting a 4 speed to a car that started life as a 4 speed then just use the original spec bits

Type 9 4 speed? is that a typo error? no such thing.  Type E 4 speed box has same size input shaft and splines 1" and 23 and is the same length as a type 9. You are thinking of the type 2 and type 3 boxes that has 7/8 shaft with 20 splines. I think the type 2 box is shorter, but type 3, type E and type 9 are about the same length.

 

 

Just for general info

 

The input shaft dia on all Ford RWD manual boxes is 15mm where it goes into the spigot bearing. The only exception is the very very early 3 rail boxes pre 63 from the Anglia/Cortina which is 17mm.

Yes I think of the Type E as a 4 speed Type 9 the case is the same, the difference is the 5th gear on the type 9 is in the longer tail housing

The Burton catalogue says "Fords first 5 speed box based on the Type E"

 

So 1" 23 spline input and 35mm 25 spline output but shorter than Type 9 and mounting point further forward.

Hello all,

Does anyone know if the output shaft on the Type 2 gearbox  has 25 splines  and 35mm diameter shaft ?

If so, this would be the same size as the output shaft on a Type E 4 speed gearbox.  If this is the case then the prop shaft end section currently fitted to the Type 2 gearbox would fit onto the output shaft on a Type E 4 speed gearbox.

Type 2 has the same output shaft size as boxes from the Anglia, mk1/2 Cortina, and small engined escorts. Its smaller dia than that of the type E and type 9 boxes. So no your type 2 prop end wont fit a Type E 4 speed.
