rosso red paint dilema / question for all you painters

Hi All,

Wonder if anyone can shed any light on this one. Had the bonnet of my Capri repaired last week and got it back to find it different. The car was restored and resprayed in 2008/9 with what i beleived to be Rosso red ( 1933 paint code ) which was what was used again but is clearly different. Its base coat and laquer. The same garage but different painter. we are unable to establish if the colour base coat was solvent or water based. Would this have made a difference? Had some test cards done and surprising Radiant red (2231 i think ) was about a 99% match? Any ideas would be help full.

waterbase should make no difference. looks like the wrong shade of the right colour.  if you used colour chips to establish the correct shade, you must rember that they (the chips) can be wrong. this is where experience comes in.  you get to know what chips are out and to always go a shade lighter/darker. this is what you learn with colours you use regularly. the problem probably lies with rosso and radiant not being colours he uses regularly. radiant is a nightmare!!

Thanks for that. I assume the colour chips are the test match cards? The paint mix systems seems to have a programme that one you have choosen the paint from the list on the screen and the volume of paint required it just mixes it up. Does the painter have additional control over the different tinters /colours for the mix? is it just a case of it needs  to be deeper so just add more red? excuse my ignorance.

yeah.....or more blue,yellow.....or green. there's also lighter or darker shades.
