Painterman Posted November 9, 2020 Author Report Posted November 9, 2020 Suposedly rebuilt pinto!! with stage 3 head 285 cam.bought an engine off a guy who as a hobby buys pintos and rebuilds.had block honed.crank polished.new shells.bearings.rings gaskets etc valves lapped.trouble is its v hard to turn over by hand and will not run properly no matter how you set timing.its juat not right it needs taking apart re building.the cam was second hand looks like some ware on cylinder 3 lobe.needs new cam and kit prob and setting up
notenoughtime Posted November 9, 2020 Report Posted November 9, 2020 Have you done a compression check? Maybe obvious but may give you a heads up Maybe go and buy a cam kit and fit that, head off and you can check bores whilst your at it if you say no 3 lobe looks worn your never going to get it right, how tight is it? How your turning it?
Painterman Posted November 10, 2020 Author Report Posted November 10, 2020 Thanks.im going to take head off im hoping bottom end is ok least i can then assume prob with valves/ cam etc dont know wh did head but know its second hand cam
notenoughtime Posted November 10, 2020 Report Posted November 10, 2020 I’d do a compression check before you remove the head so you can actually see what’s going on
Painterman Posted November 11, 2020 Author Report Posted November 11, 2020 Iv took head off.the bottom end is fine crank turns as it should etc.on the head iv put socket on cam and when it turns to around cylinder 3 it kind of slips/jerks so im guessing problem is with cam
notenoughtime Posted November 11, 2020 Report Posted November 11, 2020 That’s good news then get a decent cam that suits your requirements and you should be good to go and you should be able to set it up properly

Painterman Posted November 12, 2020 Author Report Posted November 12, 2020 Cheers any recommendation? Want power range 2000 to 6000 i believe the 285 cam is quite good. Iv got standard bottom end stage 3 head twin 45s

Iv got standard bottom end stage 3 head twin 45s 285 has always been a decent cam and somebody recommended it to me when I built my Pinto. I ended up going with a FR30. Stage 1 Vulcan head. 2.1 bottom end on bike carbs. Car produced 153bhp on the rollers and is very well behaved. Also idles nice. Edited November 12, 2020 by dt36
notenoughtime Posted November 12, 2020 Report Posted November 12, 2020 Bp 285 or fr30 Would prob suit you
Snapper Posted November 18, 2020 Report Posted November 18, 2020 There is a very big difference between a 285 and an FR30 The FR30 was designed as a high torque cam which revs to standard Pinto design and the 285 or FR33 will rev to 7500 and you would want fairly high compression to make the best out of it. First thing you have to do is find out what the compression ratio of your engine currently is then you can plan for a cam
notenoughtime Posted November 23, 2020 Report Posted November 23, 2020 How have you got on with this?
