do they even make hubs any more???? any switch would do to start you off, from the 4 port switch might be part of your wireless router, to something bigger and more expensive (when the kids grow up)

I dont think the average home user would need over 100mbit, so unshielded cat5e would be fine for home network, depending on how you install will change the performance of your network. running the network cables close to power (along the same conduit for example) will probably slow down a little, avoid microbends (little kinks in the cable as you're pulling), and don't pull too hard during the install.
if you want to run beside power then you could consider sheilded twisted pair, but this also comes with more installation work like having to terminate properly and is more expensive
