I used a varley 30 on my mk1,i bought it when i started my resto 2 years later i charged up and bolted it on and it was awesome,drove it loads at night no probs at all,never let me down

Stopped? It was never a rolling tax exemption, the date was fixed at introduction and has never moved. That's not my recollection of it smudger. The Conservatives introduced it as a rolling 25 year exemption and labour axed the rolling part of it when they got in in 1997 hence why we have the end of 1972 as a cut off. Thats what i thought aswell,and the amount if people who i talk to about classic cars still think any car 25 years or older will be tax exempt,then i hav e to explain the pre 73 rule
