Doc, if you go through all the channels, DVLA, Police, Council etc that are listed above and make all reasonable enquiries to find the owner then if the old reg keeper fails to reply to DVLA requests they may issue you with a new log book in your name. You will however only be the reg keeper and so responsible for all taxes and fines etc What you wont be is the legal owner and if they ever come forward you could have a costly legal bill trying to keep it in the civil courts

Does it matter, I like a good home build but some do look a bit dodgy !! Pro's can turn out some beautiful cars, its their job. Me, I cant weld or paint and i'm not that hot at body repairs either so why would I want to drive around in a bodge. I'd rather buy the hard the bit and build the bits I can do. Its always a good show but you cant put a classic tag on any particular car. Old Prefects are much more old skool than Escorts in the same way that a three door 5ierra Cos worth is more of a classic than a Mk2 Escort POP ( it just is ). The new 4ocus RS will be an instant classic. I'd have em all and laugh my the round ones off at anyone who told me they weren't classic. Grow up.
