Danish: I am a DIYer & will be doing the metalwork in fits & starts when I can due to finances. I'd like to hope I can cover the bare blasteed shell in etch or zinc primer & maybe dust coat the car in black paint to protect the metal & just grind off paint locally when doing the repair. I know this isn't ideal but its the best I can do. Once I have a solid shel I'll prob have to tuck it away again to get the money together for paint. Unles my missus can get car sos in to help without me knowing ?

Thanks OHC thats sort of what I have picked up on. Vista it was your van thread that made me think about asking the question on here to see what experiences people have had. I have heard about dipped shells 'bleeding' from the joints when being painted, I have heard some sprayers don't like the finish soda leaves & it can leave a residue. It was suggested to me about having the whole shell glass bead blasted & nitromors the larger panels before hand then get the blaster to just dust over those stripped panels at a lower pressure to give an even finish ? P.s Vista. Love that van. I had a good look round it at Simply Ford Beaulieu

I'd like to make a start on my Escort shell next year, Whats the opinons on dipping or media/soda blasting ?. Is it worth doing all the known welding needed first or have the dip/blast done have it covered in etch primer (or similar) to protect it then get on with the welding work. I won't be able to afford to get all the work done & topcoated in a short space of time due to finances so it will be done in stages. Will the car be ok sat in an etch primer undercover for a while while its not being worked on ? If I can ideally get it to a solid shell in etch primer then leave it for a year or so to get the money together for final paint ? Thanks

I'd like a retro daily. I've come up with a plan. A tidy Mk2 Granada Estate for a couple of grand. My mate has a 2.5 TD mk3 Granada which he will be selling off soon. I'd like to combine to two to give me cheap reliable retro power. I need an estate car for towing & work, It has to be diesel (Or chip fat...... ) I love the shape of the mk2 Granada over the more modern plastic bumper mk3. I did look at using a 2001 Ford Ranger ( or mazda b2000 ) 2.5 TD two wheel drive engine & box as they are early 2000 technology rather than the mk3 grannie being early 90's technology. Am I missing any other engines that could be good for this. I have looked under the bonnet of my old mans 11 plate S-max but can't see enough due to plastic covers to see if it would work. I don't know enough about the Tddci Ford engines. Retro Ford do conversion kits for the Zetec & Duratec engines. Would any of these bits work on the similar age diesel engines ?? Any ideas for my crazy suggestion considered Thanks

Thanks for the welcome messages & the comments on the cars. Sometime's you need a bit of a boost to keep juggling things when it comes to the cars I'd like to get them out on the road a bit more rather than spending to much time working on them.

Hi, Keep meaning to join & only just got round to it. These are my cars. Always seem to be doing something to one of them. Supposed to be a hobby but sometimes it seems like a way of life ! Mk1 Mexico restored by myself in 2005, on the road, owned 10 years. Mk2 Escort Ghia, I'm second owner, been sat up since 1985, has under 6000 miles on the clock, just MOT'd it owned 10 months Mk3 Cortina Est, Ratina, solid car, much modified & WIP, paint was shocking, so made it look worse, on the road owned 6 years Mk1 RS2000, original black car been sat up since 1988, needs a lot of panels & restoration work. slowly sourcing parts & panels. Will get to it one day, owned 4 years 1959 Ford Pop, barn find & been sat up since 1975. Needs new engine & recomissioning, owned 3 years (can't fnd a pic at the mo)

Thanks for the suggestion, Your right & I did think of going for a short stem rack but, I need the long stem rack partly for originality & partly to clear the mex big wing sump & starter motor on the 2000e box & as far as I know the flex coupling will be in the way if its down low near the rack.

Hello OSF people. A good friend of mine has asked me to keep an eye out for a mk1 Mexico or RS2000 for him. He has £12k or up to £15k for the right car. We all know he won't get a minter as he's 10 years to late for that. He wants something he can use & improve over time but doesn't want a full rebuild. Is there anything out there for sale at the mo.
