Triangulation Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 I've got myself an axle. I am building a kitcar, and for now, I'm using a 1970's axle. I've been removing 30 years of built up rust and grime and am dissassembling it to change the diff (it's welded) and angle grind and weld, etc. Has anyone go a good guide to stripping these down? I've got all the bolts off, and a bit of 'play', but nothing quite wants to give way. Also, was does the T23 code mean? And does anyone want the welded diff from it?
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 Hi mate, just a thought, have you taken the halfshafts out??? If not, there are 4 nuts behind each drum, and they should then tap out
Triangulation Posted March 28, 2007 Author Report Posted March 28, 2007 I didn't realise there was 'more' to the site with the technical sections!! This is in the wrong place! I have completely removed all the bolts. The half shaft is 'loose', but want to check whether they are just stuck in, or need the diff taking out first.
Triangulation Posted March 28, 2007 Author Report Posted March 28, 2007 Give the half shaft a good pull? What about the diff casingm, it feels like it's being stopped by some strange, mysterious force. I've had a drift in between in and the axle casing and lightly tapped around, but no give. I hate messing with things like this, they love moving around the floor. It's like doing it on a boat.

Or 'loose' as in you have pulled the shafts out? if the shafts are still in then they will stop the diff assembly from parting with the axle case. They need to come out first.
Mk 1 Mark Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 I take it you have removed the brakes ? And you have undone the 4 small bolts on each drum, Just bolt back on an old crap wheel back on to hub and hit the old wheel outwards away from the diff.. with a FBH..........Fooking big hammer.. If you have`nt got an half shaft/panal puller that is And the shafts should come out no problem... Unbolt diff and that will just fall out no problem as well, Once the shafts are out..Axle is then broken down...
Rick Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 just pull the shafts right out mate. get a slide hammer. 10 min job 15+a sore hand if you get an awkward one
Triangulation Posted March 29, 2007 Author Report Posted March 29, 2007 I have unbolted the hub plate (four bolts). I am just being weak. I will give it all a proper yank this time. I though the diff casing was just that, it slid off along the prop shaft drive shaft. Ta!
