aden Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 have just aquired one and was wondering if it was a good move
LEONMEX Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 M8 i got a quaife atb from darren/Escort-tec,its got a 3.89 cwp on & it totally transformed the car. I use it for running in the osfdc & have done a track day with it & its been fine,i change the oil every 3000miles when i do the engine & g/box oil & quaife recommend a good grade sx75w90 semi synthetic. Good investment though

Good investment though Hi m8, have you used a plate type LSD before ? If so how do they compare ?
LEONMEX Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 My mates got one in his mk1 escort & its a bit more harsh than the atb,it locks both wheels the same as mine but is a bit more like driving with a welded diff. (if that makes sense) His is a bit noisy when parking or moving slow round corners but not sure if this is usual?

Good investment though phew thats a relief! everyone ive spoke to say get a tran x plate one, but this came up cheapish so thought i would take a chance on it, hope to fit it at the weekend
LEONMEX Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 Im in the same boat as you mate,i wanted a plate type as this is what alot of people use but the atb came up at the right time & money so i got it. Not saying they are the best as i dont wana p**s any body off,but for what i use mine for its excellent & is an improvement over an open diff
aden Posted June 25, 2007 Author Report Posted June 25, 2007 cool, only use my car on the road anyway, dont race it or nothing, just getting fed up with spinning one wheel all the time, want a bit more grip and a bit more sideways if that makes sense
Fiesta Steve Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 Thanks for the info, I'll be needing something other than an open diff and wasn't sure weather to get an ATB or an LSD
Guest MK1gaz Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 I think A.T.B.'s are a much better buy on a combined street / strip / track car . The plate type L.S.D.'s are propably better if you've got a full on race / rally car but most people haven't so the A.T.B.'s are the ones to get . Just fit them and forget them as there's no set up or special maintaince required .

The ATB's got a bad name when the forrest and gravel boys fitted them, as the diff needs to sense a torque reation (difference) between the wheels, on the loose they where loosing drive, especially when one wheel is in the air, so they got poopooed by the rally boys. On the road they are fantastic. What you have to remember is a road LSD is set quite loose, the 2.8i Plate is set at around 25lb so its hardly noticiable when turning. A competition diff will be set at 85lb .. like your mates above, so it clicks and bangs when doing tight turns as it takes more torque difference to make the clutch plates slip. The ATB's are progressive, very smooth and a must in a road car if its FWD. The ATB in the Focus got a bad name.. but that was with Journo's screaming the cars round a race track, its absolutly fine on the road. Oh and another thing to remember is the ATB isnt a new invention, its years old , i'm sure it was around in the 50's but it was known as the TORSEN (torque-sensing)diff .. made by Gleason, Quaife then copied the design. Recent cars that have Torsen diffs in.. most of the new BMW M cars have them. and we know how they work ...

aden Posted June 26, 2007 Author Report Posted June 26, 2007 built up diff at work today, not much on so managed to hide out the way and get on with it! finished at 3 so was straight up the garage and fitted it to the car! my god what a difference, i would seriously recommend these to anyone with a road car! loads of traction off the line, sideways when you feel like acting an ar*e on a roundabout, and when cruzing about, you dont even notice it
DEP Posted June 26, 2007 Report Posted June 26, 2007 Nice one mate, I bought a new ATB for FOE a few weeks ago, have nt had a chance to get it fitted yet.
QuadCamCapri Posted June 26, 2007 Report Posted June 26, 2007 Nothing wrong with an ATB in a race car either, I won many races and took plenty of lap records with one, so I don't think it was holding me back any
