johnny_h Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 Anyone local that knows thier onions come and have a butchers at my non starting escort tomoz? Me and rustypup have been lookin at it tonight and can't figure out why there is no sparkage. It's got luminition electronic ignition. ??? Payment is imminent.
sparkycapri Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 check that the optical eye in the dizzy is working take the green wire off the coil (switched return feed) red is 12V in, black is earth if my memory serves me correctly. turn the ignition on with the cap off and rotor arm removed and you should have 12V at the end of the green wire to earth, then obstruct the eye by puttiing a bit of card between the sensors and it should drop to pretty much 0V then take the card out and it should go straight back to 12V if it doesn't then the magic eye thingy is fooked! happened to my mates capper recently had us foxed for a bit trying to figure it out as every thing seemed to be ok till i tried the above.
pauln Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 Do you suspect the electronic ign, if you do is it worth putting points back in? One you go back to stone age wiring it can't be too much. What have you looked at so far?

I have very limited knowledge of electrics but from what I can see there is no green wire to the coil. There is no red either There is a black and yellow wire twisted together with a cream? wire to the positive side and a black and yellow wire and also a brown wire on the negative side of the coil. I also have a luminition rev limiter if it makes any difference.
emu Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 Is it easy enough to disconnect the rev-limiter? Might be worth a try just to eliminate it. Only maybe its died and is limiting the revs to 'nothing'??

RUSTYPUP Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 We did that earlier! Wasn't you watching!! Thats what the brown was for. I think
sparkycapri Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 sounds like the black&yellow wire is the switched live that would have gone to the points i think this is the intermitant one controled by the optic eye which makes the coil spark. it sounds just like the problem on my mates capri because it seemed to be ok 12V everywere it should be. have you tried putting a 12V feed directly to the coil and splashing the negitive side to earth/bodywork to prove that the coil is working?
johnny_h Posted August 4, 2007 Author Report Posted August 4, 2007 how many volts feed should we have to the magic eye? we are reading around 7 volts and the volts drop if we stick a piece of plastic between the eyes
pauln Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 Next door to me has luminition optronic on his morris minor (fitted by me). I will see if he will let me play with it. I would have thought you would have 12v at the sensor (voltmeter on the coil neg) dropping to zero with the chopper (or card across it), unless it's ballasted (luminition shoud'nt be) then 7v non cranking is prob right. Where have you been taking your voltage readings?. Just check the coil (leads off 1.5-3.0 ohms).
johnny_h Posted August 4, 2007 Author Report Posted August 4, 2007 All sorted now, downloaded the lumenition fault finding, the module had died. New one Burton power £90 job done CheeRS Special CheeRS to Rustypup for helpings
