Well Its official, my SoopaDoopa grpA cam is past its best :sad: spent an hour up the garage with a DTI and come up with these figures

In Ex

1--0.326--------0.318

2--0.329--------0.333

3--0.317--------0.323

4--0.333--------0.323

5--0.332--------0.320

6--0.322--------0.323

7--0.319--------0.328

8--0.325--------0.330

I am fairly certain the lift should be 0.333 on both sides, so its worn 17 thou on one lobe and many are worn more than i would like,

plus there is some pitting on tip of 2 lobes so they are starting to break up, the lifters are also starting burr over so you could feel a couple dragging as I pulled them out of their bores,

Time for a change I think,

its apart for a full rebuild now, its been together for 5 years now, and its not been given an easy life, surprisingly its still got hone marks down the bores, but its going to be honed and re ringed, re shelled, perhaps a duplicate cam, or may be a bigger cam, New valves are needed as I clipped a few when the timing gear went pop, oh yes that bent the nose of the crank so that needs to be replaced.

when I do the heads I will probably up the compression a wee bit as well, it ran a 12.6 with a tired engine, so is a low 12 or even an 11 a possibility.

there are a few other things that may be addressed this time the engine is out like re plumbing the brakes and repainting the engine bay as the clutch dust my clutch makes has adhered to my paintwork and being a white car it looks very scruffy under the bonnet,

a leak free sump would be nice too.

So, I suppose round 6 is a non starter really.:mrgreen::mrgreen:

Staying with the Rover V8 then or trying something else this time ?

Staying Rover, I was really tempted with the SBF and initially it was looking like a good buy450hp,400ftlbs for under 3 grand as a home built engine from a kit of parts, with the capacity to run the engine up to 550hp if wanted, but when you start adding all the ancillary bit like starter, manifolds for my TBs,custom fuel rails, bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump. Twin plate clutch, Flywheel, conversion bellhousing to Toyota, the price was starting to get up to over 6k, and I just dont have that sort of spare cash laying about. Maybe if I sold the wife-----------probably get 2 camels and a date palm.

Yes mate that's very true , all the bits to get an engine running normally cost more than the engine did !!!!!!!!! How about one of those TVR speed 6 or AJP V8 engines then ? You could use all the TVR gearbox , starter , injection system etc etc , maybe cheaper but probably not

I did look at the AJP, lots of money to buy, and they have a flat plane crank, and IMO dont sound nice untill they are running stupid revs, BUT they do make power, and it seems they can be made to make a fair bit more as well, What did evolve from a conversation with a friend who was involved in the machining of the AJP prototype said an intresting thing, they have a lot of RV8 machining dimensions, and we both came to the same thought at the same time, Can an AJP crank be made to fit a RV8, and next time a AJP crank is in for work, I have to take a spare block over to him to offer it up.
