cwiseman Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 I’ve got a MK1 Escort with a 1300 Crossflow and going to swap the engine to a 2L pinto. I’m a novice so not sure as to what needs doing and how to do it. Few Questions: Does the transmission tunnel need enlarging or is the original fine? What do you do regarding the braking system. Do I need a different type of master cylinder, servo etc or is my current one fine? Not sure if it will be in the way as it sticks out quite alot are any modifications required to the car apart from engine mounts? Is my current axle suitable? not sure which one it is but its a standard one from a 1.3 crossflow Is there anything else i should know? I’ve never done anything like this before so excuse my ignorance but definitely up to the challenge Lastly, does anyone know of or have a 2L pinto and box which is for sale? looking for a fairly decent one as the car will be my everyday driver. I’m based in Henley near Stratford. Cheers, Chris
Mr Sam Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 totally off topic Shakespear raceway (also near stratford) 13th of this month, you'll be there right
Posse Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 transmission tunnel you can keep stander ed but if your putting a 5 speed in there it would make life more easier.you will need a rs2000 single piece prop a new exhaust system and you might have to move the rad a little bit forward as it gets a bit tight .A standard 13 axle will be fine m8 as that's all Ive got in mine .
Twinkle Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 original tunnel is ok but will be tight fit, you do need to move the greastick hole if you use an rs 4 speed or a 5 speed, you can move the gearbox mounts as needed and re weld them or get a long gearbox crossmember and mount it throught the floor with suitacle reinforcing. the tunnel brace needs moving or modifing as well with those boxes. my k2 is running a 1600gt crossflow box so no mods were needed and bolts up as original, not the strongest choice of box but it was already in and no probs yet!! for brakes just up rate to the same as rs2000 spec, all available and bolts straight on, your servo should be ok if it is in good working order. use rs engine mounts and an rs ally sump or as mine is we made engine mounts that meant no sump change was needed and no mods to it either. if you go for the rs 4 speed or type 9 5 speed box you will also need an rs2000 prop with the same flange as you diff. your axle will be fine although you may decide the gearing is wrong depending on the diff ratio but that easy to sort with a diff change. wiring in the engine bay needs a little modification as alternator etc is on the other side compared to a xflow, to fit an rs radiator you may need to put a cut out in the crossmember under neath the rad and also may need to remove the centre support to fit an electric fan as there may not be enough room for the viscous fan, the top of the rad surround may need a bit of trimming too. also need clutch cable and throttle cable, swap the fuel lines to the other side. exhaust is on the other side, i used the ashley one that doesnt cross over underneath the car and was the best fitting ashley system i have found so far!! erm i think thats most of it but i probably forgot something
mk1mexico Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 This should be made a sticky somewhere as it gets asked alot
