boXXer Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 Hello. I have a H&H ignition system for my pinto engine, and i cant get any spark. i have connected a switchable igntion live to the +,and a earth to the -. im getting 12 volts at the coil, and 10 volts at the dissy end where the plug meets the casing, BUT, the coil is getting SERIOUSLY hot (i.e, you cant touch it!) when the power is switched on. Do i have a faulty coil or what? can i try my grp a one from my cossie? they look similiar. hope someone can help as im on a serious downer at the moment. mike
boXXer Posted October 6, 2007 Author Report Posted October 6, 2007 ok, just tried my cossie group a coil, and it started smoking!!!
oliwally Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 the - should go th the dizzy, not to ground. do you know how points work? basics is the - is the bit the switches on and off to create the engry for the spark. thats why the coils getting hot
boXXer Posted October 6, 2007 Author Report Posted October 6, 2007 ah right ok. Well, this kit comes with a coil in the package using 4 electrical tabs, 2x positive, and 2xnegative, and there is a lead that connects to 2 of these, going onto the dissy, leaving 1 of each connection on the coil. So i assumed that you need to power the coil up with a positive and negative. as it wont power up otherwise...
oliwally Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 think the other two are for rev counter, but not sure
boXXer Posted October 6, 2007 Author Report Posted October 6, 2007 hmmmm, ok, so how do i power up the coil without using a earth? it only has 2 connection left on it, after the dissy power lead is connected to it
Admin Mk2Jo Posted October 6, 2007 Admin Report Posted October 6, 2007 Is the coil bolted to bare metal as you need to earth the coil? Then put the earth wire to the coil (and it will earth through the bodywork)
boXXer Posted October 6, 2007 Author Report Posted October 6, 2007 hello! nah,the coil is bolted to the inner wing on top of paint. Does the gold bracket that holds the coil need to be on bar metal then? i made a temporary earth from the spare spade connector to a screw on bare metal, and was getting 12v @ the end of the connections on the coil.
mooey Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 the coil shouldnt need earthing to the body, do you have some sort of ignition module that is plugged into the dizzy?
boXXer Posted October 6, 2007 Author Report Posted October 6, 2007 yeah, basically, there is a small black box on the dissy body itself, which has a connector block and a lead that is specially made to connect to the coil, that can go on only one way. the coil has 4x spades on it (like a group A coil) When this is connected, 2 spare spades are left on the coil itself, one - and one +. i connected a earth to the -, and a switchable power to the +. it had 12v when connected. then, on both coils they got SERIOUSLY hot.
Admin Mk2Jo Posted October 6, 2007 Admin Report Posted October 6, 2007 Okay, that was Leonmex who suggested that Phil says .... do NOT earth the coil You need switched ignition live to the coil and that's it. The pink and the brown go to the dizzy and it will work.
boXXer Posted October 6, 2007 Author Report Posted October 6, 2007 EXCELLENT! so thats what ive done wrong then, lol. I wasnt supposed to earth the coil. DOH! have i fooked my coil??? let me go and try it
boXXer Posted October 6, 2007 Author Report Posted October 6, 2007 right, done that, and it still dont spark. so there should be one "-" left on the coil that doesnt do anything? im well confused, cos it only 1 wire you have to connect up, and its putting out 12v normally, and 9v on crank over.
Admin Mk2Jo Posted October 6, 2007 Admin Report Posted October 6, 2007 You have the two wires the wrong way around. You should have 12v on crank and 12v on ignition .... are you running a ballast resistor??
bortaf Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 Might have fried the coil TBH it's only sposed to be earthed for a very short period of time through the points (when closed), just long enough to build a charge, then the points open and it then earths through the sparkplug I think been a while since i did points

Admin Mk2Jo Posted October 6, 2007 Admin Report Posted October 6, 2007 No probs ... I'm just the messenger on here for over_head_cam - he's the clever one
boXXer Posted October 7, 2007 Author Report Posted October 7, 2007 WOO HOO! got it working! took the earth strap off, and it started sparking straight away. But it did fook my grp A coil from my cossie
DEP Posted October 7, 2007 Report Posted October 7, 2007 Nice one mate, shame about the other coil thou.
boXXer Posted October 8, 2007 Author Report Posted October 8, 2007 yeah bit of a pain, lol. This cars been nothing but trouble since i got it. should be driving it tomorrow though. yey!
