Durham Fiesta Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 whats the best way to separate ball joints without the proper tool. Its the tca one that i need out
Ratters Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 you might get away with bashing it with a nice sized hammer to try & shock it out of place. That's about the only thing without a proper tool for the job & without damaging nowt.
RETRO_AL Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 the tool is cheap,go down halfords then you always got one, if you do it with a hammer you will need to get a bar to lever it aswell
Tom Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 those tools are shit! they do nothing but damage the ball joint and the boot. Only good if you are replacing the joint. hit the casing with a 'kin big hammer mate this is always enough to free off nearly every joint
c1arke Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 big bar and pry it down with some 1 standing on the other end and hit the side or the top
andygfc Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 big bar and pry it down with some 1 standing on the other end and hit the side or the top WHS big bar using chassis rail or x/member to lever off and all your weight bouncing on it

over_head_cam Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I always use my 3ft hooky bar (without the hook )
Muttley MK2 Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Strike the area surrounding the pin of the joint bloody hard and very accurately. I have been belting balljoints on and of for 33 years and it works for me
emu Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 As said, give the hub assembly a clout with a big hammer Itll only fork up the boot if you use a splitter on it and its an unnecessary expense.
Durham Fiesta Posted November 3, 2007 Author Report Posted November 3, 2007 the hammer worked a treat
spooner Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 there are a couple of types of splitter wount damage the boot or socket, but can kill the threads of not used right really only to be used if fitting a new joint, kills the boot and put stress on the ball socket= premature wear. oh....better to wear goggles sometimes
RETRO_AL Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 Ive got the top one,you leave the nut on the thread and get no damage there are a couple of types of splitter wount damage the boot or socket, but can kill the threads of not used right really only to be used if fitting a new joint, kills the boot and put stress on the ball socket= premature wear. oh....better to wear goggles sometimes
Rick Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 it can be done with a hammer if you hit it right. i cant do it though i dont have the skillsz i think the joint crackers are only a few quid anyway
