it does pickup faster it will actually go to 60mph in 2nd :lol: but im just going to take it 50 mph :mrgreen: i took it to 80 mph in 3rd :mrgreen: and then up to 90 in 4th then it seems to be hard to push it much more though i ran out of road

it did deffinatly do 100mph before i changed cams (but that was on a different road so cant compare it in that respect of does it still do 100mph)

so is it just backing off and will still reach a 100mph or is it my carb not giving enough fuel

What diff you got? you'll never get 120 with a 1.6 diff :lol: top speed as standard was only 98 so unless you've suddenly found and extra couple of thousand revs and an acurate speedo (not fitted as standard :lol: ), every road test i have from when they where new has the ford speedos reading 9 to 14 % to fast over 60 MPH.

You running the twin choke now? check your getting full throttle first, if you've mixed and matched throttle parts you may not be getting it :? also what pump are you using? on the single choke engines the pump rod is shorter, 2.0 is longer to give more fuel flow :thumbsup:

What cam pully did you use? 1.6 is slightly different to 2.0 so the cam timing may not be spot on?

have a look here

http://www.free-online-calculator.com/r ... ator.shtml

not sure what tyres your running but on 165/80/13 with a 3.89 diff ( 6000 RPM will be 107 MPH :thumbsup:

tyres are 195/50/15 and i had 110 out of it on way home from ford fair with the ford speedo as far as know it will be the standard 1.6 fuel pump and i put the 1.6 cam pully back on (whats the difference)will my 1.6 cam belt still fit if i put the 2.0 cam pulley as ive got it :thumbsup:

both chokes are opening fully so i persume im getting full throttle

according to that if i rev at 7000 id be doing 112 mph :?

i dont know what its reving at dont have a revcounter yet

but i ts 64 mph@4000 80@5000 96@6000 according to that calculater

confussed

its not about how fast it goes, just how quick it gets there :wink:

yeah spose so

id still like it to do 100 though

i think its quicker but not as quick as i expected

i was over fueling it the plugs were sooty turned iot down now and theyre nice grey/brown colour

2.0 cam wheel is same but the keyway is offset compaired to the 1.6 one (this is something i've not noticed before but it came up on a capri site and the chap who posted it had done loads of playing/research on a pinto)

Don't check the choke flaps check the throttle butterflys (bottom of the carb) to check for full throttle :thumbsup:

Fuel pumps are the same but the rod that drives em are different lengths which i assume changes the amount of fuel it delivers, this is probably why you dont need a return on a twin choke when it's on a 1.6 but 2.0 engines do ? not something i've had a problem with but it has been mentioned a few times on other forums so i though i should make it known :)

Did you change the tyre diameter for that speed site?

the diameter of you tyres is 22.7 (smaller than 165/80 13's at 23.4 inches)

if it's a 4 speed box the grear ratio will be 1 if it's a 5 speed it will be 0.82

5th gives you an extra 23MPH at 6000 RPM (if the engine will reach that which i doubt TBH) but it makes a whole heap of difference :thumbsup:

what do you think mine will be reving at flat out in 4th 5000 or more/less

Posted

5500 ish i would say with that low diff, (having to think back into the mists of time here :lol:) you've got to remember your driving a brick :lol:

the 2.3 has a much higher (3.44) diff 40 odd extra BHP and a shed more torque and still only does an extra 10 mile an hour top end :sad:

so with gear ratio 1.00:1

diff 3.78:1

tyre 22.7

rpm 5500 = 98 mph :mrgreen:

thats good i put 3.78 as thats what the tag on the diff says :? remember mines a crusader and they just used any cortina bits they had left to build these but ive not come across 3.78 before :?:oops:

driving a brick :?:? its not a lada :ykt::mrgreen:

Ah yeh just checked the ford manual. 1.6 single choke HC engines went to 3.78 or 4.11 and the LC used the 3.89 as did the Gt spec 1.6.

all gets a bit messy with Mk5 as you say ford played with ratios to keep them in a certain fuel consumption range at test speeds ect. thats why the 2.3 uses a 3.44, they really fly with a 3.75 diff and only do about 2MPH less at top end but drink more at the test speed of 56MPH :roll:

Cortina's hit an aero wall at about 80MPH it gets harder after that, surpirisingly the front and rear spoilers help, stops floating over 70.

the gearing is strange on the corty, in a capri the 3.44 is a 2.0 diff and the 3.75 is a 1.6, strange how just the body style change needs a whole different diff range :? i mean they use practicly the same running gear :)

mine was a single choke carb before i bought it but the lad i got it off had put the twin choke on and my pistons were stamped HC i noticed when i had the head off

changing the subject slightly then which diff ratio would be better for me for pickup the one i have 3.78 or a 3.89 or a 4.11

i think its thge 4.11 but lower top end is that right :oops::?

i had a 2.0 pinto escort with a type 9 box and 3.89 diff and it flew still did 112mph too (with standard speedo)

Posted

i just had a go there with that calculater an it said 87mph???

i have a 4.1 diff

5 speed type 9

140 bhp x-flow

wat speed should that do???

its should have good pick souldn it :?

You need to go here first and find out the diametre of you tyres

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalcold.html

then remember fith gear is point 82 (.82)

4.1 is a low ratio but i'd have thought 87 was a bit low :? especialy with a 5th gear :)

Dave : 4.11 will give better acceleration and less top end yes but as the power goes up (with mods or bigger engines) a low diff starts to hinder accel with wheelspin, the lower the diff ratio the more torque is at the back wheels effectivly and there's a point where changing to a higher diff and a torquer engine will give better accel, OR keep the lower diff and get more grip :thumbsup:

Thats how it was explained to me by a drag racer and from what i've experiance pissing about with cortinas it seems correct :?

a 2.8 cortina is pretty mutch undrivable with a 1.6 diff but fine with a 2.3 and quicker, and the tyres last longer :lol:

oh so thats pissed on my fireworks for my next project i was gonna do a 2.8i mk2 escort with a 4.11 diff :?

dont do it dave my mate has a 2.8i escort and its godawful.

why give me more info

ive done a pinto one (it got nicked ) went like shit off a shovel

thought id try a v6 next

ok now im amazed i put in as follows

gear=4.1

trans=0.82

tyre=22

147 mph

what is that just messing or is that your figures your reving at 7500/7600 there
