chris@torque of the devil Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 Just wondered, have contemplated using it when (more like "if" i get time)my new engine gets built, just wondered if any of you guys are using it already.
Toby Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 Is that the high octane stuff? I think Dave Colledge is from Retro Ford. At least I think he gave it a go.
TomB Posted December 5, 2007 Report Posted December 5, 2007 All i understand is,you need to put more in to get the right A/F ratio. I was thinking of setting a map up for this with my car............when i get round to that part ha ha

Guest MK1gaz Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 It's not cheap , eats your fuel lines etc , needs a bespoke map for the engine to run properly + you'll need much more of it to make full power so if your car does 20 mpg on proper petrol it will now do 10 mpg . The above are rumours but come from a good source so we'll see
GT_Jim Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 gaz is right it costs more than normal petrol there is a softer mix called E10 (the number stands for the content of enthanol in %) but im not sure if thats going on sale here - i did a report on sustainable fuels last year Im looking into LPG when the cortina is doenas its a higer octane and 46p a litre and apparently it isnt going to be taxed til 2012 the down side is i will need another ECU and the tanks are made from cast iron
Stu_B Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 I've driven an ethanol focus & I thought it as great, it was only a 1.8 but felt quicker than a normal 1.8. It was obviously built to run on ethanol rather than converted but the mpg was good
Arfur Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 Is that the high octane stuff? I think Dave Colledge is from Retro Ford. At least I think he gave it a go. He did. Got an extra 13 bhp at the top end after a remap.

My mates got an LPG BMW M5 and he reckons it goes like an old donkey when on the LPG

My mates got an LPG BMW M5 and he reckons it goes like an old donkey when on the LPG I have heard of an expression "calorific value" and suspect it's more likely that that affects the power than the octane value. If it was octane I suspect adding Timing would correct for it, I think it's not giving off the heat energy.
