Guest MK1gaz Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Just fixed my car this weekend from the last time i used it on 1st dec 07 and was shocked when i opened the bonnet to see all my nice alloy rad and other bits are alll foooooked and corroded after being out in the rain once !!!!!!!!!! Now i wouldn't mind but foooook me i've only driven it 4 times and they now look shite !!!!!!!
LEONMEX Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 I parked the anglia up in the garage end of november as the engine expired went in a week later & it was soaking wet with condensation got it out wiped it down & soaked it in wd-40 & its been fine get busy with the autosol mate
Guest MK1gaz Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 I think i'll have to spray all the alloy bits silver instead because i can't be arsed taking it all to bits and polishing it all every month . What do other people with alloy bits do then ? Is they're some sort of laquer/clear coating i can get ?
Mrs O/H/C Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 we just use good old fashioned ELBOW GREASE !!
w p e Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 use damp start it gives everything a coat of clear protection
60ftman Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Wax polish everything before you fit it. Use a good quality solid furniture wax (liquid or aerosol waxes contain water!). Wax seals the pores of the metal and stops moisture getting in. If you then need to mirror-polish it (or whatever) it's not difficult to polish through the wax. Works great on chrome as well as alloy.
Guest MK1gaz Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 use damp start it gives everything a coat of clear protectionSounds easy so i like this one . What's it like though ? Dry or slimey ?

Posse Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 There must be some sort of clear lacquer you can get to spray over your bling?
BIG G Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Dont leave it drippin in the stuff just a film.
LEONMEX Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 dust will stick to wd-40 but does wipe off piss of piddle. On my old motorbike i used to spray it on the engine casing when i put in in the garage & wipe it off when we went for a blast i think its the only way you will get round the prob gaz or ill take the rad off your hands if its being to much hassle?
Guest MK1gaz Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 mmmmmmm very interesting . WD40 or damp start for the clear stuff or good old fashioned paint
petrolhead Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 don't go the laquer route now! moisture will eventually get underneath and it will look really bad then and difficult to change. Use Autoglym metal polish for stuff that has a good surface finish like your rad, you will be amazed at the difference after 2 applications. I guarantee it (and no I don't work for Autoglym!) Autosol has a coarser grain for more corroded stuff. Then just use a silicon or Teflon type spray or wax as a barrier. It will still need buffing up every now and then though!
