Lotus-Eater Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 I hope ebay falls....badly, its done nothing but kill the old ford scene and many other things.... then we can go back to finding old mk1s in garages that hevent seen daylight in years and get them for somewhere near sensible money.... How on earth has ebay killed the old school Ford scene???!!! (Actually, I wasnt aware that it was dead - in fact its the biggest its ever been!). Anything that gets old, therefore scarce and is wanted by people gets more expensive. Do you think then, that if ebay never existed all "our" cars and parts would be cheap and the cars worth peanuts? Its not ebay that sets the price that things sell for on the site - its an auction - people bid and pay what they want to! No one is forced to bid and buy stuff that they think has got more expensive than they would like. There are no rules or a price list for what these old cars and parts are worth - they are simply worth what someone wants to pay on the open market and ebay is the most open market of all. Last time I looked, autojumples and swapmeets are still going on,so people are still free to "get off their arses" and search for the parts (while using lots of petrol which boosts the governments coffers anyway).
stickerboy Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 I think personally that you can see which sellers are businesses and which are personal sellers. In my experience you only get messed around by the 'personal' sellers due to the fact that they think that they can get away with anything. The worst scam on Ebay is 'For Sale elsewhere so reserve the right to withdraw at any time'. So lots of people bid on your item and just because you cannot get the money you want you take it off with a minute to go. This on it's own is breaking Ebay rules as you should put a reserve price on and therefore if you don't you are breaking the rules by withdrawing it when people have bid on it. I sell a lot on Ebay and if you get a non payer you CAN get your fees back and you CAN leave them the relative feedback. Without Ebay I think a lot of us wouldn't be where we are now!!
JAY PS Posted March 5, 2008 Author Report Posted March 5, 2008 Ok some good and bad points here ,ok the traders who have been avoiding the tax man should be paying tax but do any of you believe that the osf scene would expensive today without ebay .I doubt it The fact that you can sell a classic car for more money than you want for it or by advertising in magazines is proof of the internet working in our favour as owners (For eg I sold a rotten GT cortina that had been stood for 19 yrs for £425 its wasnt worth £50 really ) As buyers its all getting out of hand ,you want that elusive part ,its on ebay and you 10 others want the same ,you may pay 4 times or more what it would have cost if ebay didnt exsist Im not saying ebay is a bad thing ,the minority spoil it for the rest of us !! One thing that will happen without doubt is ebay is pushing trading back underground with members setting up group accounts in private to be able to still avoid being caught out . The other thing is people are stealing cars to break them for parts which is why the irish angle comes in ,its easy money ! I think the days of getting a bargain are numbered ,thats why ebay pulled the express section ,nowone was using it !
