johnny_h Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 Can anyone give me a reason why my battery charge gauge goes up to the top in the red randomly when I am driving? When it does all the lights go bright, the wipers and indicators go double speed etc. I took the alternator back to where I bought it and he bench tested it and found it to be fine. What else could it be?
john_3.0s Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 must be an increase in voltage caused by a faulty regulator on the alt mate, cant see what else it could be!
Alan G Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 I could be wrong but I think there's a thick wire (not sure of colour, maybe black or red?) in the engine bay loom, it branches off from the same place as the starter wires from the loom! A mate's alternator was over charging and caused this wire to completely melt... I think he fused the wire, or else brought it back to the battery positive but don't quote me on this johnny cause i'm as shit with electronics as you are!
Alan G Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 THREAD HIJACK!! Apologies now johnny but you might know or someone else may... I've got my hands on a completely standard mexico engine bay loom, I noticed it has some sort of weird looking slot connector near from where it comes out from the bulkhead... Would I be right in saying that this is for a control box or something?? How do I bypass it? It has, brown, blue, red and then another brown in the slot connector and then another red seperate with a spade connector on the end??
TwoLitrePinto Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 either faulty regulator, i think this is a little box thing bolted to the back of the alternator, or you have a dodgy connection to the battery, could be live or earth. if the alternator cannot send the charge back to the battery it will keep getting higher until it has somewhere to go. atleast thats what happend to me when my live terminal fell off my battery when i was driving, i put it back on and everything sparked like mad, engine revs dropped and voltage went back to normal. my capri voltage does go mad on startup tho for a couple of minutes? not sure why myself!
Guest MK1gaz Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 Yes your alternaters over charging johnny , this can cause your car battery too explode !!!!!!!!!
johnny_h Posted April 29, 2008 Author Report Posted April 29, 2008 Cheers people. I took the alternator back today and the bloke bench tested it again and said there was nothing wrong with the regulator but swapped it for a new one anyway. Problem solved. The charge needle is smack bang in the middle of the gauge now.
