Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 i have a full moped licence i got when i passed my car test so i presume i can ride a moped without ls and without doing a cbt correct i also have a provisial entitlement to ride upto a 125cc but i think i still need to do a cbt for this anyone know also i want to do my full bike test in the near future but priced it up its £500 for one of those where you do everything in a few days and hopefully pass dear isnt it nowadays just maybe get a 125 for now and save up to do my test but got to find out about this cbt
Trevmk3 Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 if i was you Dave, then i would do the full bike test before october as they are changing the lisencing/testing laws. there will be fewer test centres meaning you have to travel further for your test and some other things that i cant think of aswell. im thinking of doin my direct access when i can afford it which will let me jump straight onto any size/power bike
MK1 Dave Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 also i want to do my full bike test in the near future but priced it up its £500 for one of those where you do everything in a few days and hopefully pass Don't do a crash course, you don't give enough time for your new learning and skills to sink in. Take your time and do it over a few months. Just my advice. Dave - Fairly experienced road rider
Mrs O/H/C Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 i think you will still have to do a cbt ... dead easy though, 1 day spent in a car park and then some riding on the street. if you pass that which you will ... that only lasts for 2 years which will give you enough time to do the full bike test
ADY Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 i did my full bike test in 3 days, Day 1) cbt Day 2) get to ride a 500 about Day 3) test at 9am. I thought it was ok, over and done with quickly. Best to have a bit of experiance of riding on the road before hand mind.
MK1 Dave Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 Thats just not enough time on the road. Its no wonder people are wiping themselves out if thats the itinerary for a crash course!
zetecmk1 Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 Tis a bit short I agree. I did mine in 5 days. Day 1 CBT Day 2+ half of day 3 - 125cc pootling on roads rest of day 3 -5 500cc then test 4.30pm shcool run rush hour! I had a 2 day break in between and was knackered at the end. I had no experience of bikes before that! Disagree a little that you ain't ready for the roads, but the stuff you learn as a car driver of 17 years already is frightening! Made me safer in the car as well as the bike. 2 months later I bought an old GPZ550 in case I dropped it and bent it. I didn't. 5 months later still I got a 6 month old Bandit 650 and the wind blew that over for me, goddammit! I always say, you don't have to twist the throttle do you, but it's the other tin coffin drivers you have to look out for..... take care people
MK1 Dave Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 Depends how you ride, or want to ride on the road I suppose. Personally I have a long term plan to do the MGP within the next five years. Got to set yourself goals, no matter how unrealistic they are Dave
lotusless Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 i have been riding bikes since i was 12! + i was a m/c courier in london for 11 years. i have seen almost everything in that time + the common cause of crashes is inexperianced riders or born again bikers (no offence meant) i passed my test in 1980 so a lot has changed in that time, it was a one day test then + probably easier than now. but mine was in croydon in the fookin snow i would say that doing an intense course is the wrong way to go about it, you can't beat more practice + if your not quite ready then so what. a couple of days with an instructor following you is not enough, take your time about it at the end of the day its your LIFE + you only get one. + one thing to remember " all" car drivers are out to get you so treat them all as stupid + you have a fighting chance.
smiffy Posted May 17, 2008 Report Posted May 17, 2008 I used to ride bikes (like an idiot at times ),but i now work in a place that converts cars for disabled people, and we get a few wheelchair bound people in that are that way due to bike accidents-most of them not their fault(sold my bike straight away). With the amount of cars-mainly driven by idiots and the state of the roads in this country my advice would be stick to cars mate
davreeve Posted May 18, 2008 Report Posted May 18, 2008 Passed my test in march 97 ,had a bad crash 4 days later(broken arm, multiple cuts and bruises +concusion)due partly to my inexperience and partly due to an oap in a lada pulling straight out in front of me. This did,nt put me off and i was ok for a couple of years until a roe deer decided to run accross the road in front of me (very messy). Still not put off i carried on with bikes untill one morning in 2003 whilst going to work,i was following 2 transit minibuses full of foreign factory workers ,on a straight bit of road i indicated to pass them and as i was passing the rear minibus decided to overtake the front one hitting me and again it was all very messy. In my experience there are not many things better than riding a bike on a nice sunny day but i found it was too dangerous for me and now stick to 4 wheels.Experience can reduce the risk but not eliminate it. Having said that i suppose there is a risk in most things(crossing the road, flying etc).
lotusless Posted May 18, 2008 Report Posted May 18, 2008 sorry i should have put in my reply that the "most" crashes + near misses were down to stupid car/van/bus/lorry drivers + i have seen 2 bikers die before my very eye's on seperate occasions i went to court as a witness on one of them + the post office van driver still got off + he was very much at fault for the bikers death.. as much as i love my cars i love bikes too, + a lot of car drivers hate bikers anyway + i've seen deliberate ramming of bikes before ( in central london you see it all) i did a defensive riding course with the police years ago + that was good. it just teaches you not to trust anyone around you in traffic + ride in the most safe place on the road. the most common crash is from another car turning right in front of you, + overtaking at a junction is a no no aswell, but you see it happening every day. just stay safe you lot
toad650 Posted May 18, 2008 Report Posted May 18, 2008 If you've never riden on the road before your best doing a CBT anyway and i think the law changed so that everyone has to do a CBT to get on the road. If your happy with a 125 for a while do your test on that n stick to smaller bikes for 2 years as you'll be restricted to 33bhp. Thats the way i did it but i had no choice as i was only 18 now been riding 10 years seen and heard of a few bad things but the same can be said for cars really. At the end of the day road laws are there if your riding or driving if your going down a 30mph road, your taking a risk overtaking as who knows if the drivers gonna turn right in front of you, and although it would of been the car drivers fault why were you overtaking when everyone was doing the speed limit........... After a while you get to read what people are going to do before they do it and why not to put yourself on the road. But i wouldn't change biking for anything!!!
