over_head_cam Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Mine's indipendant.... from the rest of the car
kevmk2 Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Leave the indepentant stuff on the S.ierra's Unless its like Ricky Hutch's mk2, BMW rose jointed rear end
Wessie Posted October 13, 2008 Author Report Posted October 13, 2008 Leave the indepentant stuff on the not an osf's Unless its like Ricky Hutch's mk2, BMW rose jointed rear end yeh we're not talking sierra, we're talking bmw rear ends just like ricky's beast. i know of one on the IOM but i cant get over there until november and would like some pics ! has anyone got any contact information for ricky?
Retromotorsport Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Ricky will tell you its one trackday away from being six linked again.. we;ll have a final fettle with it at Brands, but hes allready said, if Andy beats him round ther, its coming off
Mr Sam Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 old live axel still the preffered then?
Wessie Posted October 14, 2008 Author Report Posted October 14, 2008 Cant beat the live axle give us time
kevmk2 Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 Well its straight forward, it fits and works and you can launch them at around 6-7000rpm without the diff blowing up, plus the whole tyre wears instead of the inside edge
Wessie Posted October 14, 2008 Author Report Posted October 14, 2008 i know of one very very quick escort running IRS, a 2.0 rally car that can put most 4wd machines to shame. times have changed and i know the old saying of 'if it aint broke, dont fix it' but for the more serious competion cars where axle parts can start to reach big money, there may be an opportunity for an IRS kit to be produced to cater for these needs,my mate just needs to design and devolp it on one of the escorts as his final year uni project and im designing an IRS system with wishbones for the anglebox
Retromotorsport Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 Cant beat the live axle give us time Lower wishbone, trailing arm, McPherson strut type IRS's are a non starter, if your re-engineering a car for handling then it has to have double wishbone suspension, the only advantage that the other types have over a live axle is unsprung weight, and some examples are even heavier than a live axle so defeating the object. Theres a classic example of a waste of time, of course its only rumour, but apparently an all singing and dancing IRS equipped Escort with a World Class driver (rip) was at Sweet Lamb, along with an almost identical escort that was 6 linked, driven by said drivers mechanic.. the 6 link was quicker... belive the latin expression QED fits here..

tim Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 i know of one very very quick escort running IRS, a 2.0 rally car that can put most 4wd machines to shame. whos car is that ? most properly a irish escort as they seem to have the most devlopment mk2s
Wessie Posted October 14, 2008 Author Report Posted October 14, 2008 not an irish escort but built by a bloke called lee batty, races it on the IOM and has doen all the fabrication himself even when the irish boys came over for the manx with there millington lumps etc they couldnt keep up with him http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/513/iom32rh5.jpg
tim Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 just lookin at the manx result,he beat a 2ltr xe power mk2 with live axle by a min and that guy hadnt seen IOM before that event. intrestin to see what the car is like off the island as local knowledge counts for alot over there
Wessie Posted October 14, 2008 Author Report Posted October 14, 2008 just lookin at the manx result,he beat a 2ltr xe power mk2 with live axle by a min and that guy hadnt seen IOM before that event. intrestin to see what the car is like off the island as local knowledge counts for alot over there yeh it is bloody quick, he's just saving for a new gearbox for it then hopefully we might see him on some off island events, its just s shame its so expensive on the ferry to and from the island:( and IRS is still the best way to go !
Retromotorsport Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 will you be fitting an anti-roll bar ?
Retromotorsport Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 And more importantly, are you designing this for rallying or racing ?
Wessie Posted October 14, 2008 Author Report Posted October 14, 2008 will you be fitting an anti-roll bar ? on my one i will be, i'll be running inboard shocks similar to how jamie's spaceframed tuscan/escort has been done so i can get away with a smaller adjustable anti roll bar similar to the older formula renualt's. when i get some more sketches and designs drawn up i can post them up to see what you think im not sure what my mate is doing for his design ! but i think primarily his will be designed for rallying with the odd track day thrown in as he had alot of fun at rallyday around combe !
Retromotorsport Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Ah Ha .. caught ya ... if you use an Anti-roll bar its not Independant, as the two sides are connected ..
