Daveyboy20 Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 Not striktly the right place I know but I need to know how to do this ASAP as my mum needs her car tomorrow for work. Basically, the radiator is rotten and its always overheating its had shed loads of radweld etc.. New rad is £100 from proton (its a proton aeroback) and no scrappies have any. My mate scrapped her Micra so I whizzed the rad yesterday but the bottom hose is in a different place, Ive managed to splice a load of hoses together so its all hooked up now but the old rad had a thermostat to control the electric fan. The new one hasnt got a thermostat so I presume I can just wire up the old fan to a switch in the cabin to manually control it? I have a switch and plenty of wire, I know its piss easy but Im clueless with electrics, how do I wire it up? Thanks in advance
Stu_B Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 Does it have a plug coming off it? there should only be a couple of terminals so connect them to the positive & negative of the battery for now... if you're desperate! Then see if it's sucking or blowing & switch them to suit. That's what I did in my rover when the head gasket went so it was permanently on! Just don't forget to disconnect it when you stop the engine... or don't be lazy like me & fit a switch!
evildave Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 use a nice heavy wire (2mm+) if it's going direct off the battery via a switch, my elec fan runs about 15amps when on! make sure the switch is rated for it as well, and fit a fuse just in case
Daveyboy20 Posted November 26, 2008 Author Report Posted November 26, 2008 There is a plug coming off, there is a blue wire and a black wire. The black wire splits into two and bolts to the car body so i rpesume is an earth. The original blue and black wires go into a plug coming out of that plug is a green wire which goes to the thermostat plug. Would I be right in thinking I strip all this back put the blue wire to (+) terminal the long black wire to (-) terminal and the short earth on to the body. loop one of the wire (which one blue or black?) into the cabin and through a rocker switch with a 10amp in line fuse?
Copey Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 got any pics? may be able to help if you do
Copey Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 wire the blue wire up to a switch and a power suply, black wire in the plug will just be another earth i would say, so probably connect it to the neg on the batt, earth it and you may need to connect the thermostat wire to the blue wire, and jobs a good'un
Daveyboy20 Posted November 26, 2008 Author Report Posted November 26, 2008 So blue wire goes into the cockpit and to a switch then back to the (+) terminal. black earth to body and long black to (-)? What about an in line fuse what do i need and what rating etc.. Thanks a lot for your help mate
Copey Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 you can get switches with fuses already built in from maplin so just get one of them (less wires) and i think if memory serves me right the amp output of a fan is 30?
Daveyboy20 Posted November 26, 2008 Author Report Posted November 26, 2008 Evil Dave what size fuse do i need? and when you say make sure the switch is rated does it just say on it somewhere what amps it is? Im perfectly capable mechanically but lost when it comes to even the simplest bit of electrics
Daveyboy20 Posted November 26, 2008 Author Report Posted November 26, 2008 Cheers Copey, will it say on the fan somewhere or something?
Daveyboy20 Posted November 26, 2008 Author Report Posted November 26, 2008 All it says is DENSO 12v made in Malaysia! You reckon 30amp? Evildave said something about 15amp is he refering to somethin else? Top be honset the only amp I know is an electric guitar amp!
Copey Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 haha, well stick a 15amp one in and if it blows you will know you need summert higher, didnt do much about car electrics when i did my electrical engineering diploma
Daveyboy20 Posted November 26, 2008 Author Report Posted November 26, 2008 Cool cheers mate, its not likely to blow straight away if its wrong though is it? Sorry for all the questions!
Copey Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 tbh i dare say he is right about it bein 15amps, but when you get the switch buy a 30amp fuse too, then if it does blow you have a replacement fuse
Daveyboy20 Posted November 26, 2008 Author Report Posted November 26, 2008 Right thanks mate, Im off to try an do this before it gets dark. Cheers for your help!
livewire7116 Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 take plug off the rad sensor and bridge it with an appropriate rate fuse. Fan will run constantly as if the sensor was hot making its contact
