they have different splines at steering wheel end and also mk2 has larger thread and nut,

 

column tube is slightly different as well i think due to way the mk2 has different sticks for lights and wipers, mk1 only has indicator/hi beam switch as wipers and lights are on rocker switches

also the mk 1 collum is shorter because the mk 1 rack has a 6" shaft coming out of it and then the colem bolt's on and the mk 2 one there is no shaft and the colem bolts to the rack the mk 1 one looks identical to the capri rack just smaller so you can't interchange them without changing the lot

only mexico had the 6'' shaft,other mk1s are short like a mk2
