best welder to get for a novice..me??

hi all, for xmas i have asked for a welder my dad pointed a couple out on machine mart, but i am not sure, as i will be doing the welding, as my dad wont have the time due to other commitments..

 

so what will be the best welder for me, also best price,and what wattage do i need to get?? i will be using it for genral bodywork, and sills etc..

 

anyone help out?

The best i can do is suggest that you get the most expensive one you can afford

I am sure i saw an article in one of the mags last year that compared welders

dont get anything less than a 150 turbo cooled mig though and it is worth investing in some proper gas

I've just bought a clarke 151dp from machine mart which seems better than my old SIP in terms of ease of use. I always buy the dual purpose ones cos when you are outside and it's windy it's easier to use gasless wire (gas for best results though). Have a good look at the wire feed mech as these tend to fall apart. I don't reckon the clarke one will take the 14 years of abuse that my sip one got.

I have a Sip 130 turbo and a Sealey 175/5 the Sip was my 1st welder and very good for small patches and general bodywork, the Sealey is a pro welder that i bought about 14 years ago and never have problems with it, will weld continuously for hours.

Had a Sealey 180 semi pro, for the last 17/18 years, apart from the obvious consumables you have to buy, has performed brilliantly. Ironically cost less to buy the latest equivelant now than it did back then, seen them for £230 occaionally.

there is a shop in dartford just at the top of esat hill/the brent

area. its called gage & welding, there very helpful if

you get the old boy or the sexy girl but the young guy comes

across a bit of a to$$er.

i would recommend the clarke 130en no gas i have just bought one and i have never welded before and i am getting on very well with it and have been welding nice seams on patches on my car once i got it set up right even though i don't no what any the switches do or mean although i am using it with gas
