Anybody good with plumbing/central heating?? UPDATE

I have one radiator in my house which refuses to work.

Every other radiator in the house works fine and the valves are open both ends of them. (Valves also open on the duff one)

The system is running at 1.7-2 bar.

The copper pipes approaching the valves dont even get hot.

Today i turned on the heating and isolated the radiator, i loosened the inlet valve off and water drained out, which got significantly more water as i opened the inlet valve, so i know thats ok. The water flow stopped when i isolated the outlet valve, which i guess is good as its effectively airlocking the radiator.

I replaced the lost water in the system, with the valves under the boiler and got it back up to pressure, went to bleed the rad (it had lost around 1 litre) and water came straight out of the bleed nipple!!!!!!!

How the fook can the boiler fill it back up but not with hot water like the other 8 rads in the house!!! Grrrrr

Doing my head in. Just to add its the rad in my main bedroom so i need it aswell

Help a chilly Graeme

Yes similar, only on one end. On the other end its just a bare brass nipple type valve that needs pliers to turn it :?

ok take the top of it they unscrew and theres a little pin get a pair of pliyers and very carfully wigle it up and down that should get her going

agree with the above, sounds like the thermostatic valve is stuck closed.

Be carefull not to pull the pin up to far as it could come out followed by hot water  but you might need to wiggle it up and down quite abit

Hello, by the sound of it you have a combination boiler. first of all you should put your pressure up to over 2 bar, between 2 and 3 is good.

When bleeding any heating system your boiler should be OFF.

If that fails, it then sounds like your radiators need balancing. the rad with the problem is more likley to be the last rad on the run. So you may have to turn down the rads just before the problem one. Try this for starters, if its still buggered then send me a PM. Hope this helps. Peter (ex-plumber)

Ok bit of an update, i have managed to get the thermostatic valve off (misunderstood you needed to turn the knurled nut beneath it)

This revealed said pin.

The pin only protrudes around 6-7mm from the valve and will push in and spring back happily enough?? Is this ok?? Maybe only moves a few mm though??

Havent had chance to get the rad off and flush it yet, I dont actually have a tap that will take my newly purchased hosepipe, they are all too big  So that means a trip to my parents 15 miles away to flush it.

Off to up it to 2-3 bar now see if it makes any difference.

Fooking freezing in there

Ok i get to the boiler just now, and the whole pressure has disappeared on the guage

Reset the boiler and waiting now, im hoping the pressure has gone because that valve was stuck

Way fookin hey its working :mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

Took the thermostatic valve off again and it just started warming up. Im going to leave it off whilst its working, i will fix it in the summer.

Took me half hour to get warm finishing nights this morning. And were getting our first snow at the moment so it will be even colder tomorrow morning!!!

you lost all the pressure because you over pressurised the system  the boiler has a relief valve that will let water out at 3 bar ish  should be 1-1/12 bar when cold

glad you got it sorted
