mex255l Posted February 7, 2009 Report Posted February 7, 2009 i have finally got round to investigating when my car was built as it is not free tax, log book says it was first registered in july 1973 cut off for free tax is jan 1973! but my car is an L reg and according to every website i have looked on an L reg was made in 1972 therefore my car should be free tax . Been googling most of eve but I am not having much luck in finding out more info on the car and when it was built there are sites that do vin checks but they are all for 1980 onwards. Can anyone give me and advice or help as to where to go to. Tax office says if i can prove the car was built before jan 1973 it will be free tax!!! yippee!!!
stickerboy Posted February 7, 2009 Report Posted February 7, 2009 As far as I was aware it makes absolutely no difference whatsoever when it was built. It's when it was registered that matters. I amy be proved wrong but that's what I thought.
tim Posted February 7, 2009 Report Posted February 7, 2009 have you got your chassis number to hand.if it was build pre 1/1/73 then u can clame tax free,pm me your chassis number and i can de code it for u
32evo Posted February 7, 2009 Report Posted February 7, 2009 L reg cars were registered from 01/08/1972 until 31/07/1973, if you can prove the build date is before 06/01/1973 you will qualify for free road tax.

the shonkster Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 i had the same problem what you have to do is ring ford archive department up the you give them your details they will then send you a nice headed letter saying what year your car was built only downside is that it costs £1 a minute i will try a find the phone number later hope this helps
cjay2004 Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 this might help ya! http://rs-garage.co.uk/decode.html L reg cars were registered from 01/08/1972 until 31/07/1973, if you can prove the build date is before 06/01/1973 you will qualify for free road tax. does anyone know how to decode what day it waz built? as myn is a january built car as the chassis denotes NJ = N=73 , J=january? would like more info on this.....
tim Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 nar can only get it down to the month of build, the numbers after it tell u the number of production for that month. the cut off the tax free is 1/1/73 not the 6th
Pipster007 Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 the cut off the tax free is 1/1/73 The cut of for tax free is the 31/12/72 You pay tax as of the 1/1/73
