Retro-gone. Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 further to my tyre chioce dilemma ... im now looking at keeping the rostyles and fitting cooper cobra 205 60 13's, i have a nearly new cheapo 205 60 13 which im about to fit to my spare rostyle wheel to try on the capri to see if it clears the arches ok, if it does il be buying the cooper cobra's, but before i do (and this may sound very silly) are all tyres measured exactly the same. ie youve got 2 different brand tyres but both are 205 60 13 , will they measure exactly the same or could there be a slight difference in height or width? like buying a pair of jeans, 2 different brands but a pair of 32's in one brand wont fit like a pair of 32's in another brand, you get what i mean?
Admin Vista Posted February 19, 2009 Admin Report Posted February 19, 2009 I have Cooper tyres on my Alfa and have no complaints about them, I said that about the Falkens too though didn't I? To answer your question I don't know about arch clearance as it depends on the offset of the wheel you have, I do think however that 205/60's will be too wide for your 5J Rostyles. Take a look at this site, it's very informative about tyre choices and about 2/3 of the way down page 2 is a rim width calculator for recommended rim sizes for a given tyre size, 205/60/13 works out as a minimum of 5.5J http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg2.html Edit: Oh and re the different tyre brands, yes there can be differences, typically in the width of the tread pattern. i.e. A good 205/60 will have a wider tread pattern in contact with the tarmac than a cheap one.
Retro-gone. Posted February 19, 2009 Author Report Posted February 19, 2009 well ive just had the 205 fitted onto my 5j rostyle at quick fit and they said its ok, he said he wouldnt go any wider tho, just fitted it to front then back and it clears everywhere, although it wouldnt if i hadnt fitted the coilovers at the front, the tyre would have scrubbed on the original fat springs.. the 205's are only half inch smaller than my 185's 70's unlike the 185 60's i tried which were a massive 2inch smaller. so scott are the coopers a good modern compound?
Admin Vista Posted February 19, 2009 Admin Report Posted February 19, 2009 Work fine for me mate, mine are 205/55/16 and are Cooper Zeon XTC's.
ChristophStone Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 What's the clearance like at the back, mate? My car has a mk3 axle fitted which i beleive is something like an inch wider either side, so I'm not sure if the 205's would fit? I think my rostyles are 5.5" too, not sure though. Cooper tyres need to get their arses in gear and start making them in 185 width
Retro-gone. Posted February 19, 2009 Author Report Posted February 19, 2009 at the back they are perfect, inside and out the arches and ive got one inch lowering blocks on too i just rang and ordered the coopers and should arrive 2morrow, il get em fitted and post some pics, cant wait ive just got some cobra 5.5 slotmags so im gonna polish em up and put the goodyears on them for when i get my other osf
ChristophStone Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 Good stuff . Really don't know what to do about my wheels/tyres. I don't want to keep the 15" alloys that are on it, but I don't know whether to try rostyles with the white letter tyres, or something else with them like revo 4 spokes, or go completely in a different direction and try a wheel that is black with a chrome rim, and some wide, low profile tyres to get it closer to the ground. I feel for you man, I don't want to make the wrong decision! I think you're car will look ace with the coopers, by the way. Will properly bulk out it's footprint too.
Retro-gone. Posted February 19, 2009 Author Report Posted February 19, 2009 chris i know what you mean, youve seen me tearing my hair out over tyre and wheel choice, im releived ive found my solution, i can restore youre rostyles to as new condition, obviously in silver and black , not chrome.. i thought about revo 4 spokes too, my intention was to paint the spokes daytona yellow, i still might id i get offered a cheap set.. whatever you decide chris the car will look great
ChristophStone Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 Got a load of thoughts running around right now Tony! There's a mk1 for sale on pistonheads running 7x13 minilights that looks ace. But then... do I go silver? or chrome? Or black with the silver rim? Or I could go with the revo 4 spokes... With any of the above I'd go with 185/60 or 175/50 tyres and drop the suspension, keep it very very low and hope the tyres tuck under the archs with the wide wheels. Or I could go 205/60 white letters on my rostyles, or 175/70... or I could even get some 185/60's and paint the white letters on myself! Ooooor, I could get the chrome minilgihts, and put white letters on them, or find some of those chrome appliance 4 spokes. The decisions are killing me!
Retro-gone. Posted February 19, 2009 Author Report Posted February 19, 2009 i dont think you can get 185 60 profile chris, i tried. My local quick fit has got one set of four firestone 185 70 13 with good prominent writing that you can paint, this is the last set they can get! they are a real nice tread pattern and im guessing firestones are a quality tyre..
