badchild Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 Found one wandering aimlessly about the garden and my da's pheasant pens the other day but that night my staffy thought 'great lets play ball with him' and now all the poor wee hedgehog is doing is sitting under a bush curled up. Tryed feeding him milk in a saucer but hasn't taken any so far. Theres no visible marks on him either and as everyones off for easter we cant phone anyone for advice, any advice would be much appreciated Thanks Ryan
Retro-gone. Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 just leave it be mate itl come round, when they go in shock its there way of recovering, doesnt mean they are harmed. we have one that sneaks under our gate and stays in the same spot curled up for days on end (after our dog has had its fun with it) , then all of a sudden itl dissapear overnight, it does this quite often so i shouldnt worry.
badchild Posted April 12, 2009 Author Report Posted April 12, 2009 Cheers retroglam! dont like seeing wee animals in trouble ill just give it a bit of space in the garden, the only problem is my dogs
Retro-gone. Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 if its within the dogs reach youd best move it, find a little gap in some bushes and plonk it in there.
Trevmk3 Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 just found this What to Feed HedgehogsTinned cat or dog food and even dry dog food is a useful addition to a hedgehog’s diet. They’ll also eat things like bacon rind. You should also ensure that you put out fresh water with any food you leave but you shouldn’t feed a hedgehog milk or bread in large amounts as they can cause diarrhoea.
zetecmk2 Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 make sure you wrap it in clay if you're going to bake it, then all the spines stay stuck in the clay, leaving just the meat!!
FredTransit Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 DONT give it milk! Cat food is the best thing. Have to say sadly our terriers killed a little hedge hog in the winter, it crawled under the freezer in the workshop, and I thought it was a rat, so I encouraged them to have a go! Felt really bad when I realised what it was. Had to get the RSPCA to come for it and put it down, though it was still alive when they collected it (though it's guts were hanging out ). If it wasn't covered in spines I would have finished it off myself. If you are really worried, call the RSPCA, or maybe there is a wildlife charity that might come out.
caprinerd Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 hedgehogs have a teritory of 3 miles hard to believe aint it
badchild Posted April 14, 2009 Author Report Posted April 14, 2009 I thought it was a rat, so I encouraged them to have a go! you evil man!! dogs will be dogs eh?
