Mick The Cabbie Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 I often read threads on ere where people go "I've spotted a car on someones drive, shall I doorknock it?" etc etc. I say GO FOR IT!! I've bought a good few motors like that over the years. Here's my most recent proof that it often works! Ok,it ain't an OSF and prob not everyones cup o' tea on here, but a succes for me all the same as I've always loved 1980's Audi's etc I spotted this 90 quattro last year parked on someones driveway a couple o' miles from me. I've always really fancied one of these after owning a lovely red 1985 facelift 80 Sport back in the mid 90's. Couldn't afford a quattro back then Anyway I doorknocked this one late last year a couple o' times but no one was in. After putting it off for a while (due to to many cars and other commitments) I tried again a couple o' weeks ago. This time the owner was in. A real nice bloke. Turns out he bought the car back in 2000ish and had 3 years fairly trouble free motoring. Then one day whilst in Wales, he ran over a dead deer in the road and popped the radiator. Luckily no other damage was suffered apart from a slightly bent lower front valance behind the bumper. Anyway a new rad was fitted and all seemed well for a while until it started grumbling and overheating and the head gasket eventually gave up. That was back in 2003. The car has sat ouside ever since. It seemed to have stood up fairly well on first impressions although lookin very dirty and being covered in mould/moss and all manner of other biological life. At first, he seemed very reluctant to part with it (prob why it's stayed there for so long) He's always had the intention of putting it right but as things often go it was never looking likely to happen any year soon. I made him a respectable offer. He said come back in a week or two whilst he pondered. So last Saturday, I went back with a battery for another chat. A deal was swiftly done and the 90 quattro was all mine!! We powered the car up and after a couple of attempts she fired into life!! She runs fairly well although the hydraulic lifters are noisey and the head gasket HAS popped. Theres no oil water mixing or leaks. However there are exhaust fumes in the expansion tank.. Pics from sunday night's collection Resting place for 6 years On the trailer heading home!!!
