Gearbox problem

When I use my car in anger my second gear crunches when I engage it. In normal road use it is a bit notchy but OK, it’s only when I change up or down to second at higher revs.

 

What’s causing this and is it time for a replacement? I don’t want it to explode when I’m out and about or drag racing!

Sounds like a worn syncro, it'll continue to get worse but could last like that for some time. I'd try giving the box an oil change and see if that helps at all
