who runs thicker tyres on the back?

im just wondering if the handling on my mk2 escort would be crap if i put 195 or 205's on the back but left 185's on the front? unless somebody knows if 195 or 205's will fit under 4door wings that r sitting 2inches lower than standard? aint bought anything yet, wanted to tap the well of knowledge on here 1st. cheers.

i have 205/60 and 185/60 setup on my capri, its ment to reduce understeer, not sure if it would make much difference on an escort though

I had 175/50's on the front & 235/50's on the rear of my cortina... was very tail happy

use to run 195 70 13 rears and 175 70 13 fronts on a mk2 tina estate again to help with steering issues i had worked in the dry but in the wet that was a different story

I have 195's on the fron and 205's on the back. I did it to try and make my steering a little lighter

im gonna put 205s on the back next time i get new tyres and leave 185s on front

tyresize is nothing without knowing what rim they are on .....

 

for comfort go for a tyre thats wider than your rims

 

for handling smaller than you rims

 

for example .. 10" wide rim ..

 

Track should have a 9"-9.5" tyre

 

Road and i'm talking a comfy, no noise sloppy handling car here .. 10"-11" tyre

 

and thats actually tyre footprint width ..not whats written on the side of the tyre

I had 215/40/17's all round on 7" rims which handled brilliantly except in the wet but under very heavy acceleration it would spin up too easy in 2nd and still be struggling a bit in 3rd.

 

So i got 215/40/17's on the front and 225/45/17's on the rear on 7.5" rims. It has a smidge more tolerance in the wet now and under heavy acceleration 2nd gear is now like what 3rd used to be, so in the dry i can floor it safe in the knowledge itll probably grip, and 3rd doesnt spin at all. The only drawback is at initial turn in, and on long swooping high speed corners the car feels a lot more tail happy, and ive lost a touch of feel from the back end but for me it was worth the compromise for grip.
