Aww I don't know what to do, I can get a brand new bike that retails at £600 for £360 under the ride 2 work scheme, it would fit me better as the Marin I have been offered is probably too big for me, however the Marin is an awesome bike for the money...

If I do go for a new one, then I was thinking of the Specialied Hardrock Pro disc, your thoughts would be appreciated

its best spending more money on a bike than getting for 500 ish quid i looked for ages then brought a specialized pitch/pike for 975 reduced from 1,300 good bike halfrauds bikes do someokish bikes but would u trust a young person fresh out of school to build it for you.go to a proper bike shop pay more get better service etc after all its true what they say pay what you get for.and dont get cable disc brakes get hydrolic and alsoget dampers not springs etc

i had a HR pro in 2004, great bike, had it 2 years and never failed me, regularly took me round coed y bren, cannock and delamere and then everyday to work, great spec with sun rims! on only upgraded to a rockhopper pro because i saw a 'last season's bike' with £300 off list price. you cant go wrong with one of them mate

stick with a hardtail, cheaper full suspension bikes are a pain on the road as they tend not to have lock-out on the rear, check out the specialized bikes and even kona's, if your ridings not going to be too extreme a rockhopper will do the job, even the hardrocks are great bikes and quite cheap, nice light bike and tough as old boots. konas tend to be heavier. if you have nice budget buy british and get an orange

Have you taken the stabilisers off yours yet then??

yes about 10 yrs ago

I bought a CUBE not long ago. Lesser known make but are as good as specialised and oranges. the spec i got on the cube for £750 was better than the same price specilised. they do do cheaper options as well which are same frame but slightly cheaper components which then means you can upgrade components if you start to do proper cross country. bought it from richardsons cycles in hull. lg

Sorry to but in chaps, but am I the only one who thinks 'it's only a bike' ?

My personal approach would be to buy a 50 quid special and when it breaks just buy another one  TBH I'd want tax and test for 500 smackers ;)

I have gone for a Chris Boardman bike from Halfrauds, it retails at £600 but got it through the ride to work scheme, so it ends up costing £360. Which ain't too bad IMO.

zaskars seem to be prone to theft!!! i've had 3 stolen over the years :( but got 2 back as bike thieves are generically thick!!! they knew i was into my bikes, so knocked on my door and asked if i was after some cheap parts!!!

another time, i followed my tyre prints in the snow...right to the scum's front door!! thicko's!!

Well, shorne country park has some nice trails, good for a sunday jaunt. Were doing a night ride next wednesday on the north downs with the medway cycling club. Not sure how keen they are yet tho! bedgebury pinetum near tonbridge has some great trails and there is also bluebell hill area. I haven't had my bike long so need to get in shape myself. With regards to what to buy....get as much as you can afford. You will get more for your money buying second hand or even last years models. Halfords new Boardman range of mountain bikes look like a half decent entry bike and someone else mentioned cube which are also really good value.
