Cleaning a panel filter

I am going to clean the K&N panel filter on my daily, I have just bought a K&N cleaning kit off the 'bay. What is the best way to do it, is it worth soaking it or just spray it on? It's filthy black and is full of crap and bugs. Hopefully will give it a bit of whoosh afterwards.

spray it on making the dirt go one way not back over the area you just cleaned......let it drain the re oil
