Mr Sam Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 I have been using this for thin plate welding/ bodywork repairs. It's all I need and only 200 ish. Obviously if you gonna spend 400 you will get a lot more for your money. same as what i have and its great for the money dont bother with a Sip mate there crap, the feed mechanisms go in them regularly
over_head_cam Posted July 15, 2009 Author Report Posted July 15, 2009 http://www.lawson-his.co.uk/scripts/det ... duct=14237 What's mad is that this machine is higher spec that some of their welders, but cheaper I like it though, or do I go for something more compact? I'll be doing lots of bodywork, but I want to do more fabrication and that so I'm still undecided
over_head_cam Posted July 15, 2009 Author Report Posted July 15, 2009 I've looked into the Portamig thing too. Apparently they went bust years ago, but the name is used by a firm called Thermal Arc, and their machines are just as good, and in a similar price range to what I'm looking for. That makes the choices even harder
oldskoolfred Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 what you want is a big old beast of an oxford mig no cheep parts all big and heavy oldskoool style !! will weld from rust to thick plate i used one for years with out problems now we got 3 phase
hellblue Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 just to send you mad your link ... http://www.lawson-his.co.uk/scripts/det ... duct=14237 is what i have now i can sum it up by saying its ... ok but thats it it does what it say's on the tin would i buy another ..... no What about going down your hire shop see what they have & hire one to see what you think ??? You do a lot of welding you need the right one, i would say what makes a nice welder is the wire feed & control of it

I'm still in two (or 3 or 4) minds about what to go for I did consider hiring, but it's another cost I could do without really. I've used a couple of different Ceboa/Snap On machines before and thought they were really good, but they are too expensive at the mo. My only other option is to go for a second-hand welder, but I suppose you never know what it will be like and how long it will last. I'm more undecided than ever now

over_head_cam Posted July 29, 2009 Author Report Posted July 29, 2009 I went for a Telwin 180/2 (eurotorch version) It does the job with no frills and no flashing lights Done a cash deal - 400 quid, got Guages, tips and 5kg of .8 wire with it too. Got to sort out a bottle now, I had to give their one back http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp? ... =1&jump=44
