I have been using this for thin plate welding/ bodywork repairs. It's all I need and only 200 ish. Obviously if you gonna spend 400 you will get a lot more for your money.

I've looked into the Portamig thing too. Apparently they went bust years ago, but the name is used by a firm called Thermal Arc, and their machines are just as good, and in a similar price range to what I'm looking for.

That makes the choices even harder

What about going down your hire shop see what they have & hire one to see what you think ??? You do a lot of welding you need the right one, i would say what makes a nice welder is the wire feed & control of it

Deffo, it's about control and consistency. I'm still in two (or 3 or 4) minds about what to go for :?

I did consider hiring, but it's another cost I could do without really. I've used a couple of different Ceboa/Snap On machines before and thought they were really good, but they are too expensive at the mo. My only other option is to go for a second-hand welder, but I suppose you never know what it will be like and how long it will last.

I'm more undecided than ever now ;)
