mk2 escy ron Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 .......bolting new wings on a mk2 escort or do they [HAVE] to be welded. please explain many thanks
Admin Vista Posted July 29, 2009 Admin Report Posted July 29, 2009 It depends who you ask and what look you're going for but the long and short of it is yes you can, mine will be.
mk2 escy ron Posted July 29, 2009 Author Report Posted July 29, 2009 hi vista, what do you mean by 'what look'? and what reason are you bolting yours on for if ya dont mind me asking
Admin Vista Posted July 29, 2009 Admin Report Posted July 29, 2009 Ease of alignment and replacement and because that's how Gary does it And look wise if you want originality / concourse look then you need to have them welded on, but if you're not worried about the sniffy types criticising for it then by all means bolt them on.
over_head_cam Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Sellotape would work, wouldn't it? It would make sense to bolt on. Done properly of course
mk2 escy ron Posted July 29, 2009 Author Report Posted July 29, 2009 thank you very much for your input chaps and ohc....................................your nutz
emu Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 Sellotape is no good Phil, it goes yellow! You need to use that posh book repair tape Bolting your wings on will be just fine
Retromotorsport Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 Bolting is fine... if you have a strut brace of good quality and your inner wings are good. Some say no, but then an original car, with standard spot welded wings around 10 that are doing something mounted to a wing rail thats held on with more GRP than metal is no way stronger than properly fixed bolt on wings.
NginEEr Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 im bolting mine. its easier in the long run, especially if you prang it, i hate drilling spot welds
mk2 escy ron Posted July 30, 2009 Author Report Posted July 30, 2009 what is the best way to bolt them on? and what do ya do where the wing joins the bottom of the front valance? thanks in advance
X FLOW EDDY Posted July 30, 2009 Report Posted July 30, 2009 I bolt all the wings on my mk2 escorts, much easyer to remove if you bend one. Drilling out spot welds is a right pain in the arse !!!!! I use M6 stainless steel mushroom headed bolts and stainless washers. Also i have a tube of non setting window putty ( we used to use it when putting the windows in ice creem vans !!) to seal the wing to the inner wing.
