I'm having a nightmare with my rear wheel bearings leaking oil. I've tried sealing them in the housing and all sorts. Could someone tell me which is the correct way round for the bearing (I'm using Escort bearings by the way :D )

 

Does this face go inner most (towards the diff) :

Sorry the pics are rubbish but hopefully you can see the difference.

 

Anybody else had problems with rear wheel bearing leaks??

The first pic is facing to the wheel, the second pic should be facing to the diff side.

 

Had the same issue a few months ago. Leaky only after 300 miles after replacemend, messing my rearbrakes too, on boh sides.

Looks like there's a bad batch on the marked.

If oil gets through the seal it also de-greases the bearing which is packed in grease.

them bearings with the seal round steve are crap & we have stopped selling them at work. I had the same prob with my escort. You need an old timken or skf bearing with no seal. :thumbsup:

I have this problem too - no too serious but interested to know :thumbsup:

Interesting!!! I've had about 4 or 5 sets in the last year i'd say and they all have leaked accept the latest pair which came from the same factors but one was slightly different to the other. The one that was different to the rest seams to be ok but the other one is leaking badly again.

 

Does anyone know of a good supplier of decent bearings?? I am toying with the idea of just getting some aftermarket seals, repacking the bearings and fitting new seals. I'm releived it's not just me then! I have tried fitting them both ways round but the collar on the wheel side makes sense because of the way the seal is fitted

the new style of escort bearing have this o-ring round the outside,the old style bearing has no o-ring round the outside. These NEW style bearings are crap & out of 5 fitted to my escort ive managed to get 1 to seal properly. You need to find an old style bearing made by skf or timken without the o-ring round the outside. You will do well to find a new style bearing that will seal properly & alot of the quality bearing suppliers are discontinuing this bearing as its a proper ball ache. Helpful? :mrgreen:

Had mine from GMS and I told him of my problem zo he kindly gave me an other pair with no charge. :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Have to say for me it was the first time I experianced this, allthough I had heard of it before several times here in Holland.

 

SKF and Timken are not available here ( in Holland) anymore so we have to look for alternatives.

I'm running a sealed bearing and the axle one now - seems better.

Try giving the part number off a bearing and then asking for the type of bearing Leon's recommending to Barry or Barry (yes there's 2 of them :lol: ) at Apollo Bearings in Crawley - 01293 539-539

 

They're not dirt cheap but they are good and knowledgeable. :thumbsup:

From what i remember those bearings are vauxhall.. viva ? the ford ones dont have the o-ring, On one side of the ford bearing it has a raised lip around the outer edge of the bearings seal this faces the diff & is the seal that stops the oil going around or through the bearings case ! ( it is a full oil seat with spring lip on it to the bearings centre) if the end of the axle is a bit dirty or rusty then the oil will get round the seal too

As the outer case of those bearings is the same dia. as the ford ones it will fook that o-ring getting it in ... also the ford bearings are flat without that raised centre part of the bearing (that may be there to throw the oil away from the bearing ??????)
