Andrade Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 .. what do you do about the electronic ignition? i'm still not quite sure whether to go for Jenvey's or Weber carbs.. The carb solution is much simpler as you avoid all the swirl pots, high pressure pump, return pipes, extra wiring loom and what not, but the fact that you still have to run some form of ECU for the lack of distributor bugs me as it kind of beats the whole purpose. So question is, what do you guys use as an ECU when running carbs on a Zetec? edit: and if you could put up any pictures and part numbers please
GT_lenny Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 seeing as you only need to control the spark when running carbs you only need an ignition only ECU several are availible, such as megajolt and mega squirt etc and are much cheaper than the ones that also control fueling
petrolhead Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 you can also use the MBE ignition only unit which is supposed to be very good. I think it is around £350
Andrade Posted January 10, 2010 Author Report Posted January 10, 2010 Mine runs on weber alpha i was considering this, are you running the whole kit including carbs or just the ecu? and what sort of bhp are you getting? https://www.burtonpower.com/product_mai ... =WEBK97017 https://www.burtonpower.com/product_mai ... =WEBK99001

I'm running an 1800 for time being, with new race crank and some piper cams, said to be running....cough.......180bhp.

I was aiming for the 200bhp mark, with throttle bodies, a ported head set of fast road kent cams and stainless exhaust. However I am starting to like the carb option as it can be as good and gets rid of all the extra equipment that comes with throttle bodies. Does that weber ecu have a tachometer output? and does it have any other gadgets such as shift light? edit: mine is a 2.0L

Andrade Posted January 10, 2010 Author Report Posted January 10, 2010 Tacho, yes, shift light dont know, only driven half mile and parked up to get on road,ex race car. carbs and throttle bodies will give same power,no matter what anyone says, more work/money in setting them up as you need to spend fortunes getting all mapping sorted. You hit the nail on the head there! I don't think it's worth going down the throttle body lane in my case since it will be a road car. At the end of the day you'll get similar power figures maybe the carbs being less efficient, but i'm not really considering fuel economy as a factor since it will not be used as a daily. Thanks a lot for the help oliwally

Thanks a lot for the help oliwally Throttle bodies will be less effiecent if theyre not mapped properly, flat spots, hessitations, poor starting. carbs,by their very design with a jet and vacuum will be able to cope a lot better.

radar tech Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 i am using Suzuki GSXR 750 38mm carbs (not bodies) main jets drilled out to 1.8mm , home made inlet manifold and a megajolt kit. this is a real budget option cost about 150 quid all in but seems to work fine
mk1mexico Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 I use weber alpha, it has the ability to run a tacho and a shift light yes

Andrade Posted January 12, 2010 Author Report Posted January 12, 2010 Seems like this is the one. Mine is 95mm and this one is 65. Should be able to run 40mm air horns no problem with it. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-ZETEC-DCOE-I ... 500wt_1182
