I think it's when people buy the original plate to personalise their car, the original car will be given an age related plate, but as most of the original style numbering are being used, DVLA issue the cars on an "A" plate

Something like that

Pipsters about right,

In 63 A plates were issued originally for only 4 or 5 months before B regs were issued jan to may I think, so there was a surplus of A plates, when a car was brought into the country as a used car, or the reg was sold on, or possibly a rebuilt write off a A plate was issued, sort of older version of the dreaded Q plate.

The orignal A reg number was also only issued in 4 counties for a start as well. My dad bought a old bsa bike a bit back and it had an A plate on it because it had been rebult from a box of bits and had no v5.

If your car is older than the A reg then if you really want a 3 letter 3 digit plate you can get one as the DVLA will issuse you one but i think youll have to prove the date of manufacture etc , will need letters etc from owners clubs etc.........had a mate years ago was mad on getting rid of the A and getting the 3 n 3 plate.........
