mk1estate Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 Just bought myself a spigot bearing removal tool, so if anyone local needs to borrow one let me know. Its one of those tools you only use once and expensive to buy, obviously the loan is free and im willing to trust the forum members to return it to me. I had to pay over £7 in postage so it only suits someone local who can collect AND return it to me
w p e Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 for £7.00 that must be some tool. my pullers no bigger then a swan vesta match box. it is a original old skool type like a mini 2 leg puller
RossMK2 Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 What's a spigot bearing? Dan dont worry i dont have a clue either i was too embarassed to ask
over_head_cam Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 It's in the end of the crank and it supports/aligns the input shaft of the gearbox. There are no stupid questions and there's never a need to be embarrassed
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 once i put my box back in with out a spiggot bearing but next day bought one and fitted it it vibrated and rattled like fook
over_head_cam Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 I don't use spigot bearings Because you're a wrong(wheel drive)un
mk1estate Posted March 11, 2010 Author Report Posted March 11, 2010 This one is based on a slide hammer, it has 2 fingers which open up and grips the bearing then you use the slid hammer to pull the bearing out, being a slid hammer thats why its so heavy and hence the postal costs...simples
banarama Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 its a roller bearing that taps into the centre of the flywheel, before you put the clutch on,if you look at the end of the splined shaft it goes into a smooth taper bit. that taper bit sits in the bearing, as the gearbox locates into the clutch.
sutton4ord Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 Cant remember how i use to do them was about 25 yrs ago
914Driver Posted March 12, 2010 Report Posted March 12, 2010 Got it, we call it a pilot bearing. Ready? Get your money back on that tool. Lets say the spigot bearing is 15mm inside diameter. Fill the bearing half way with grease, get a 14 - 15mm diameter rod and slip it into the hole. Now give it a whack with a BFH. The hydraulic pressure pushes the bearing out. [BFH = Big Fookin' Hammer] Dan
mk1estate Posted March 12, 2010 Author Report Posted March 12, 2010 i had tried the grease method and it didnt work thats why i bought the special tool ang guess wot...yup that dont work either. Ive spent the last 2 afternoons under the car with a hammer and chistle, its still not comming out it seems to have welded itself in there. so my next question is what else can i try all i can think of now is to drill it out but its bound to be hardened, i cant get a drimmel in there either. Ill carry on with the hammer and chistle but with a bigger hammer this time untill i hear back from you lot
