popeye Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 what is the law reguarding wheel protrusion.!!!!! i run a transit with 15" rims. have been given a set of 15"rims with bigger tyres ( i can't help myself, bigger the better ) but when fitted they protrude out of the wing .... . called into see mr. plod ..he says " you are aloud up to 2" no more....!! any info any one...
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 i thought they werent aloud to stick out at all ??
Smudger105e Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 I also thought that there was no tyre protrusion beyond the arches.. I have had a quick look at some other forums, and it seems that the tyre can stick beyond the bodywork but the tread of the tyre cannot.
Fiesta Steve Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 The treaded part must be covered, the sidewall and wheel rim may stick out, and thats an actual fact ! Ask our Daggle

Daggle Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 The treaded part must be covered, the sidewall and wheel rim may stick out, and thats an actual fact ! Ask our Daggle Just seen this and read the PM, Steve has this spot on, not allowed to have the tread sticking out from the edge of the wing, so if you look from above, you can see the sidewall and rim but not the tread. The offence would be having no wings! It's a bit like running a HGV without mudguards, check out Regulation 63 of the Road Vehicles Construction and Use Regulations 1986. It basically states that all motorcars should be fitted with wings or similar fittings to catch so fas as practicable mud or water thrown up by the rotation of the wheels. If the tyres stick out further then the wing then it would fall into that catogary
popeye Posted March 15, 2010 Author Report Posted March 15, 2010 hold on .......so if i don't use them in the mud or rain i'am OK
morcheen Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 there's no law but you might get laughed at for doing it
Daggle Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 hold on .......so if i don't use them in the mud or rain i'am OK Errr no, I wouldn't. It don't matter if it's raining or not. Also think if it catches a stone and flicks that up to the car behind, I personally would be pissed if the car in front of me did that and it had wide wheels on it
w p e Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 so just a thought all these real custom type cars IE deuce coupes model Ts 34 ford highboys all dont have have wings/ fenders so how do these stand?
Daggle Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 so just a thought all these real custom type cars IE deuce coupes model Ts 34 ford highboys all dont have have wings/ fenders so how do these stand? TBH I don't know, I have had a look in the book and I can't see a defence for them, I think that they just play the dumb card and hope not to get a tug , after all I think you have to be a bit of a traffic nerd to know this stuff

awesome Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 all tyres stick out when cornering so whats the difference ?
Admin Mk2Jo Posted March 16, 2010 Admin Report Posted March 16, 2010 hold on .......so if i don't use them in the mud or rain i'am OK Errr no, I wouldn't. It don't matter if it's raining or not. Daggle Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 all tyres stick out when cornering so whats the difference ? 1st point....Big difference is that when cornering the vehicle behind will not be directly behind the vehicle that is cornering, Soooo it won't get smothered in crap that is being thrown up, unless you are right up its chuff!! 2nd point.... Only the fronts will be sticking out, hopefully the rears won't be sticking out from the arches, coz if they do you have got some major axle movement there!!
Fiesta Steve Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 all tyres stick out when cornering so whats the difference ? 3rd point, if they are near the inside wheel that is sticking out then they are about to get run over anyway 4th point, if they are near the outside wheel then the vehicle will be moving away from them, so no bother
vibrating_Cake Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 a friend of mine used some rubber material used in factories etc, that hang down at the doors to keep rats/draughts out and just rivited it around the arches creating a lengthened lip
