chunkys mk1 Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 how much power will a standard english axle take before there is a good chance of it breaking
SmokeEm Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 Depends on how much grip you have 175/50x13 Nankang ditchfinders, probably 400bhp + 235/50x15 Toyo Proxies, probably 200bhp Very difficult to say without knowing set up etc
chunkys mk1 Posted April 7, 2010 Author Report Posted April 7, 2010 iam running 185/55-13 was looking into a 2.3 galaxy engine in my mk1 escort but don't want the hassle of fitting an atlas just wondered if it would take it
SmokeEm Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 It would take the power provided you don't launch hard. The planet gears have a tendancy to break otherwise.
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 do you actually mean the axle or the diff and shafts because i cant see the diff and shafts taking 400 bhp
SmokeEm Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 do you actually mean the axle or the diff and shafts because i cant see the diff and shafts taking 400 bhp I was being hypothetical Dave If you fed 400bhp in very smoothly there wouldn't be an issue but obviously, normal spirited driving then you'd have a problem
X FLOW EDDY Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 The ford mk2 escort prep manuial says that 150-160 bhp for rally use is about the limit before you get repeted half shaft failure. Saying that though i know a chap that has a 220 bhp vauxhaul xe in his mk2 escort track car and is still on the orignal 1100 pop plus axle, never broken a shaft in 4 years of running the car On the outher hand my old mate Richard lingard ( rip matey ) used to snap half shafts in his all steel 1360 mk2 rally car like basterd carrots, did 3 in on one event once.
Retromotorsport Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 Eddy, its a power/grip ratio.. to little power, and you'll be fine, too much power and you'll be fine.. just the right amount to produce full grip, without wheels spin and ... BANG!!!
RS2kSX Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 i'm running a rough running pinto on 45's and i've done 3 diffs, now i fitted an ATB it seems ok, no half shafts yet ?
