6 mounths ago someone hit my car while it was parked in the garage.i told the insurance company i wanted to repair the car myself and they said that was fine.

i recieved the cheque today for the amount agreed but have now found out they have registered the car as a cat c write off and now needs a vic check without telling me this was going to happen

it is still taxed at the moment so can i still use it and if i get a vic check will i loose the reg number and go on a q plate

You can still drive the car but your insurance will be 3rd party only. When you get a vic check the car will be looked over by an appointed engineer to make sure the repairs have been completed to a safe standard. I believe it will have to be MOT'd as well. The reg no. will stay the sameThis is what I was told by my insurance company when my van was written off a few months ago

My father in law repairs damaged cars for living, the first car he ever had vic checked he was shiting himself worring they would rip him apart (it was a major accident repair ie; not a wing and bumper. Anyhow, all he said they checked was the vin plates etc to confirm the car had not been rung ! Panic over, lol.

the vic check is in no way to check the quality of repairs. i have taken unrepaired cars before. it is what is says, a vehicle identification check. they are just looking to make sure the numbers all match and the car isnt a stolen one replated to look like a written off car.

its absolutly nothing to worry about but it will be shown on the v5 from now on that the car has had a vic check. however you need to MOT the car.

as for the vin number missing from the strut top it might be a bit of a suck it and see type thing. but they may ask for proof of the repairs carried out in replacing thje strut tops at the end of the day its up to you to prove its not a ringer not them to prove it is!
