Billy_smith Posted April 22, 2010 Report Posted April 22, 2010 What does anyone no or think about them? I no people used to put them in old fords and kit cars and things. Can anyone give me some info on them please
w p e Posted April 22, 2010 Report Posted April 22, 2010 they still fit them in moggy minors but as only an 8 valve a x/flow would be just as good or better
Billy_smith Posted April 22, 2010 Author Report Posted April 22, 2010 Thanks turns out I actually have a connection who is very good with the engines and can get very good power from them. He has a supercharger kit for one as well I believe. I've been offered a couple for free you see and thought it would be a bit different
tina2 Posted April 22, 2010 Report Posted April 22, 2010 I still have a few of these engines about and intend to put a two litre in a mk 2 cortina. I have dug out an old issue of car and car conversions with an article on them . Here are a few facts about them, the block ,due to it,s compact size is very strong, the crank is steel and is tuftrided and crossdrilled. The conrods are also steel, the pistons are adequate for tuning up to 180bhp and will cope with up to 11-1 comp ratio. The cams are high lift but short duration hence the torquey nature. The heads are superbly designed and will cope with 3mm more valve lift also the ports are short with no kinks .By just bolting on a set of twin 40,s properly set up can see an increase of up to 25bhp. My mates and I all ran Supermirafiori twincams years ago . Still got one and a Mirafiorisport
tina2 Posted April 22, 2010 Report Posted April 22, 2010 An old trick to raise compression ratio is to fit the domed pistons out of a 1600 twincam ,not sure what ratio this gives, 105tc strada pistons have an even bigger dome, the 1800 head has 43.5mm inlet valves as opposed to 42mm in the two litre . Also the Lancia t/c exhaust manifold has much bigger bores. The oil pump is a high capacity, high volume pump as standard. The engine was designed by Aurelio Lampredi . Before he went to work for Fiat he designed Grand Prix winning Formula 1 engines for Ferrari , says it all really.
Billy_smith Posted April 23, 2010 Author Report Posted April 23, 2010 cheers for the info thats a pucker bit of information! Keep it coming if anyone else has any
V8ian Posted April 23, 2010 Report Posted April 23, 2010 The ones I have come across allways seem to need a crank grind, bourne out by fiat with the range of bearing shells, think there are 12 different undersizes to choose from, so once the tuffriding has worn off it seems the cranks are fairly soft under the surface, In the same area, are oil pumps still available?? I know my mate could not find one for his morris minor, The other thing is they are FOOKIN heavy, Seem a lot heavier than a Pinto

I use to see loads being smoked around chasing mkii escorts with Lotus Sumbeams trying to keep up somewere in the distance .......... dont make cars like that now . . . they underseal em and use water fast paint n stuff
Billy_smith Posted April 23, 2010 Author Report Posted April 23, 2010 Are they front or rear bowl sump?
tina2 Posted April 23, 2010 Report Posted April 23, 2010 Front bowl sump, the oil pump sits in th e sump making it impossible to reverse [unless anyone knows different] The Argenta sump is shallower and wider, this may help clearance issues. Also if you use a Lancia or Regatta oil filter mounting this mounts the oil filter horizontally .
tina2 Posted April 23, 2010 Report Posted April 23, 2010 Nearly forgot, if you can find one , the Lancia Dedra is available turbo,ed and then there are the Volumex supercharged engines
